I always say Richard Manuel of The Band. Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention and of course, Tim Buckley. They have been my top three for quite a while.

Roland Orzabal as he matured vocally around the time of Songs from the Big Chair, but especially from the Seeds of Love on time, Elemental, Raoul & The Kings of Spain, ELAHE. He has a lot of different depths to his voice and a falsetto and great range.

Dave Gahan, who is actually sounding better at 50 than ever. His baritone on the 2012 Soulsavers album, The Light the Dead See, is stunning, and his vocals on Depeche Mode's recent album, 2013 Delta Machine, are also fantastic. Rough live for several tours, but their latest tour he sounded great. I think he must have stopped smoking. He seems very passionate these days about music I think from gaining confidence in songwriting as he started late and having outside projects. He really stretched out vocalwise stylistically away from the confines of DM's electronica music in the Soulsavers album and also as far as working and writing music with Rich Machin of Soulsavers.

Presence of God from The Light the Dead See

Elton John is high on the list, too

Lots of greats in this thread! I'll throw in an old honky tonker - Faron Young. He sings this like he's falling off a log - it sure does hit the spot.

After some thought, my only answer to an almost impossible question; the best I could do was narrow it down to three- Morrissey, Morrissey and Morrissey

One who deserves more mention is Dion. Still amazes me how effortlessly he rolls off those "whoa-oh"s in "Runaround Sue".

^I agree that Dion had an amazing range. He had a similar style to Lou Christie.

I don't have an absolute favorite, but a few of my favorite singers are:
    Diana Ross
    Frank Sinatra
    Johnny Cash
    Elvis Presley
    Dean Martin

Lots of singers I certainly like mentioned so far. Dion's blues disc's work well. Two with a pretty good range that work well for diff styles IMHO are Lyambiko and Chad Mitclell.

If I was putting a band together, I would draft Paul Rodgers. The man can sing anything well and I would get a rhythm guitarist and keyboardist to boot.

I've never heard him live because he retired in his forties I guess, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned him Steve Perry. His vocals are unbelievable.
