I always say Otis Redding although I only have two albums of his and a compilation (plus the FAR superior to my ears mono single of Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay.) I did have more than this though and I really need to add and expand here.

There's just something about his voice - which is what it's all about isn't it? :D

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a whole bunch of others that I've admired over the years..

    Roger Daltrey
    Ian Gillan
    David Coverdale
    Gaz Coombes (Supergrass)
    Jim Morrison
    Lennon/McCartney
    James Taylor
    Levi Stubbs
    Harry Nilsson
    Jose Feleciano
    Bon Scott
    Peter Gabriel
    Phil Collins
    Sam Cooke
    Robert Cray
    Rod Stewart
    Steve Marriott
    Elton John
    Eric Burdon
    Russell Mael
    Stevie Wonder
    Buddy Holly
    Gene Vincent
    Bono
    Johnny Cash
    Tom Jones
    Elvis Presley
    Roy Orbision
    Louis Armstrong
Karl Denver (any fans? Little Scottish guy who could belt it out and holler like nobody's business! His big UK hit was Wimoweh. SUPERB!! )
    Billy Ecktine
    Frank Sinatra
    Ella Fitzgerald

Sorry there's only one female singer in this list, but I usually just like women singing jazz & easy listening; another is Peggy Lee. I was never a fan of Aretha Franklin oddly. Or later singers. I prefer more traditional stuff and a sometimes a bit of The Supremes etc when I'm in the mood for a good old listen to Motown - like I have this week gone (played the first 6 volumes of Motown Chartbusters). I've got CDs and LPs by Diana Ross, KT Tunstall, The Corrs the Eurythmics and some more contemporary artists and I do like them- but wouldn't say they're favourites.

Phew, I could just go on and on... :uhhuh: Something of a fairly random list there- but I suppose it paints a picture of sorts! :D

I could've added him in to my list- but I always tend to see him and his music as a whole 'experience (pardon the pun! :))

But for me, this has to be my favourite vocal of his and so many of his talents are to the fore here (composition/playing/singing)

Paul McCartney, because he can sing anything and sing it really well. Because he seems to really believe whatever he's singing. And because he can sing phrases like the one at 3:20 in this song:

Roger Chapman hands down for me. His scary vibrato, akin to Joe Cocker at times, also has a gentler side without losing any edge. For those that may not know him, he was the voice of Family and Streetwalkers and then many years of solo work. He has done some great guest vocals too, one more popular one was the lead on Shadows on the Wall from Mike Oldfield's Crisis album.

    Eddie Vedder.

Especially live. No other singer makes me 'feel' as much as he does.

My #2 favourite. Say you'll be mine if Mal refuses. Peggy's cover of "A Hard Day's Night" makes the Pass Me By album entirely worthwhile.

To make a (potentially inappropriate) analogy, there were faster receivers, stronger receivers, receivers who could jump higher, etc. ... but Jerry Rice was unquestionably the GOAT (greatest of all time), because he put the tools he possessed together to the greatest effect on the field. So there are surely singers with more power and greater range, but for me the GOAT is Bob Dylan. At his best, he brings across the inherent emotion in a song better than anyone, and few (any?) sing with greater conviction.
