Bowie: "Man Who Sold the World" in November 1970 (I wouldn't count his previous stuff as glam)
Bolan: "Hot Love" in early 1971 (ditto on above).

Both beaten out by this in spring 1970:

They're so awesome! The sad thing is even though they were so flamboyant they had to keep their sexual orientation hidden. David Bowie, man in one magazine article blew all the labels and stereotyping away. Even Elton John kept his homosexuality hidden until well into the 70s

No, it wasn't a joke. Grant made that observation.

Yeahbut...When did psychedelia shift into glam?

Arthur Brown and The Stones (Satanic Majesties stylee) would fall more towards psychedelia, shirley?

In the book Strange Fascination, it's said that while on tour in 1972, David flew (before his flying phobia) a trans-Atlantic dash to go see Elvis at Madison Square Garden. He went to the show in full Ziggy garb. He was seated at the front and Elvis gave him a "if looks could kill" glare. Nope, Elvis and company weren't down with the Ziggy glam look.

Early 70s in the era that we associate with glam-rock, I'd say that it was Bolan who I think decided to put some glitter on his face for a Top Of The Pops appearance. Alice Cooper preceeded him though, with a very transgender look (let alone the name of the band):

Jimi was of course the one who really brought colourful "glamourous" clothes to rock in 1966-67, instantly making everyone look square. Even Clapton had a perm, copying his look. Bolan's image was very Hendrix also (as was Syd Barrett's). Bowie even had a Hendrix perm in the late 60s.

Looking deeper into the 60s, The Kinks were perhaps the first to put over a dandy, glamourous look, with the frilly shirts and colourful suits, shirts and ties. The name already suggested "kinky" and Ray's sometimes slightly effeminate vocals also set the style for Bolan and Bowie.

Ride A White Swan came out in October of 1970, before Man Who Sold the World.

I still associate that one with the twee-folkie T. Rex, but mileage may vary.

Bolan started glitter, by wearing glitter on his face while performing. Bowie took that into glam territory. Cooper was flashy, but didn't intend the AC name as anything but an irony. They thought it would be cool to have people show up to see some midwestern folk singer named Alice Cooper, and be presented instead with this kind of "demented clown" (Cooper's own words). Little Richard was first to break big into glam though, as mentioned. By '72 it really didn't matter much though. Everybody started doing glam by then.

Looks like several were heading down the path in the same direction, at roughly the same time. Jagger, Elton, Bowie, Bolan. Who was first to get glammed up? Jagger? Can't include Cooper or even Little Richard, because glam rock was used first in reference to music in the UK...
