Little Richard is not the correct answer. Glam rock is a particular type of music and he did not play it.

This is the same thing people do in the punk threads when they say Eddie Cochran or Link Wray were punk rockers.

The big breakthrough came right here though. I think just about everybody had the hots for Jim.

Bowie is my number one idol, but it's my opinion that he never invented anything. He did steal mercilessly and often surpass the original work.

Most sources I've read say Bolan was the first, if you use "glam" to mean early the '70s U.K. style rock. Problem was, he never got past it. It's almost painful to watch the last episode of his show "Marc" on which Bowie appeared and did a short duet....as well as his newest single, "Heroes." Meanwhile, Bolan was still all big-haired and glittery and living five years in the past. He died soon after.

"Glam rock" is an 'after-the-fact' rock-writer term like "freakbeat" or "psychobilly".
Very few called it that in 1972..."glitter rock" and "*** rock" were the street names for
    that particular poison.

Glam rock was first coined/used in the UK so imo American rockers shouldn't be considered as to who was first..

From this photo, I think we also have to agree Mick Jagger invented Antmusic.

    Of course!
But it's the word glam preceding rock that the UK used first, when describing what was going on.

Listen to "Soul Love" on Ziggy Stardust and think T. Rex...

(I had it pointed out to me, but once it was I couldn't not hear the influence)

I don't know, it's not much of a leap from "Whomp Bomp a-be bop" to "bang a gong get it on." The line goes straight back to Little Richard. He was gender-bending before it was cool too. :)

I've been taught in another thread that they are even the origins of Reggae and House.:goodie:

  17. I've always loved how Bowie mimics Bolan's vocal style on 'Black Country Rock'.

Most genre tags are created by the Press after the music & not before. It's only Rock n Roll but I like it.

Based on most of the replies in this thread, it seems all anyone had to do to be considered glam rock is wear colorful clothes and makeup.

Bowie vs. Bolan--the Debate That Never Dies (even in my own profile!)

Interesting points about Little Richard, though, and weirdly coincidental. Yesterday a young Bowie fan asked me about Little Richard* and I pointed her to some articles. It really made me think the same thing--that he was the original glam rocker.

*I'm sorry to say that I find many under-30s might know and love the '60s and the '70s but are clueless about the '50s. I've had to explain Little Richard and Buddy Holly just in the past couple weeks. Pass on the knowledge if you can!

Don't just make a blanket statement. Back it up with the quote and some context please.

I dunno...seems like Bolan was embracing the punk/new wave scene at that point (notice who some of the other guests were on his TV series?)
Later T-Rex songs like "Teen Riot Structure" hinted that he would have fully acclimated to the new wave/post-punk early 80s scene successfully.
