Except that there was always someone influential who was defending the Beach Boys, even during the hippie era. Didn't they appear at the Fillmore with the Grateful Dead?

Warrant didn't carry that much weight.

The Association had a collegiate "intellectual" streak. They were just a little too ambitious to be written off as a mere Top 40 band (even though they did have their hits).

In the film Brian is clearly seen walking through the crowd in his Carnaby Street garb

He probably died wearing a Carnaby Street swimsuit. He loved that style.

Also, the song "Along Comes Mary" was thought by many to be about marijuana, so that helped them get in. "Wendy" was also considered a song about getting high. :)

    A) where did they play in the lineup?

    B) who cared about The Association enough to be upset that they were there?

If this list is accurate, The Association opened up the whole festival:

    Friday, June 16
    • The Association
    • The Paupers
    • Lou Rawls
    • Beverly
    • Johnny Rivers
    • Eric Burdon and The Animals
    • Simon & Garfunkel
It's a good thing that the other two days of the festival were infinitely stronger. Otherwise, Monterey Pop would NOT have become legendary.

That is where I thought they played.

They might have booked those acts on the first day for a reason?

How many people would have even been there for opening act on Day One?

  10. Yep, not even "Surf's Up".

Jefferson Airplane had 2 songs in the film, although "Today" was not complete.

    1) Pennebaker didn't film each act's entire set because of insufficient film stock. Not everyone who was filmed wanted to be in the movie.

    2) It takes time to edit, deal with each act's management and get legal clearances and publishing matters worked out, find a distributor, raise money, etc.

Though it help break him in the US, Jimi was hurt a bit but being in it as many expected that kind of showmanship every time they went to a Hendrix concert.

They had been playing Good Vibrations live in concert since October 22, 1966, when they debuted it at Hill Auditorium, Ann Arbor, MI.

"Wendy" was the Beach Boys. Perhaps you meant "Windy"? :)

Hey, as fun as "Monterey" the movie is, I really am bummed
Magic Mountain from the week before wasn't caught properly.

Just to see Beefheart fall off the stage would've been priceless.

I saw the restored "Monterey Pop" at the Detroit Institute of Art Film Theatre last night. There is a intro with 92 years old D.A. Pennebaker talking about making the film. No extra footage, but it was cool to see it in a real theatre and it sounded and looked great. It is showing a couple of more times there on Sunday 7/9 and on Sat. 7/15

and it is worth checking out. Elliot Wilhelm is the Man!

If they had played those yes...though the band may have vetoed Brian and played Barbara Ann. But if they had played the new material they would have gotten new life into into a new fan base...they had moved on to some amazing and relevant music

Arthur Lee & LoVE were the one of only a few LA bands that was really accepted and loved by the SF scene, but Arthur turned down the invitation to Monterey Pop. Too bad, and it could have made them--success-wise. Though Arthur likely would have likely still gotten in the way of their success...

Moby Grape kinda destroyed their own career, and by their label's silly move to release FIVE singles at once.

And don't forget the bad situation created by their manager Matthew Katz, who still to this day sullies their legacy.

Took them another few years to get the "cool band " tag.
Saying that if they did play Jimi would have to drop his " huh,no more surf music" lighter sprayed on strat..whoosh. :)

Lesley Gore should have been invited- she just had a hit with "California Nights", and maybe, like Otis, she would have won the crowd over, thus sustaining her career ("California Nights" was her last Top 40 hit).
