I'd actually love to see Krist, Dave, and Michael Stipe form some kind of new side-project band together and release an album of original material. That could produce some really great music.

 

I agree and would like to hear Dave and Krist to play on an album again.

What makes this so cool is that Kurt and Michael were friends, and Kurt was a big R.E.M fan.

 

They were friends, but Kurt was never into REM to my knowledge. I was obsessed with Nirvana at the time.

 

That's me in the corner...that's me in the spotlight losing my heart-shaped box...

 

I admit I can't find a decent source for this right now, but apparently Kurt really loved Automatic For The People and may have been listening to it the day he died.

 

Someone needs to make a mash-up of that, pronto.

I think he probably liked the subtle humor of the song considering what it's really about.

Kurt loved R.E.M., at least that's what I always thought.

 

Everything I've read seems to indicate he was a big fan who appreciated and admired Michael's talents.

 

I'd be thrilled with this... much better than the rumored McCartney sitting in.

 

It is a known fact that at the time of Kurt's death he and Michael had been communicating about a collaboration. There were rumors of lost recordings for quite awhile but it is now understood the project never got a chance to materialize.

 

Apparently Kurt was ready to leave Nirvana and move on to a solo career of some kind. It could have been amazing.

 

Kurt told John from The Fluid that he wanted to do branch off and do something "more poppy like REM".

 

I'm not disputing he was friends with Stipe. I also recall the rumours of collaborations.
I just never heard or read of him being a "big fan". He talked about stuff like the melvins etc.
Anyway, its a rather pointless discussion, so lets move on.

 

He really should have been someone like Dylan or gotten completely out of the business altogether.

 

Just because he didn't talk about them a lot in interviews doesn't mean he wasn't a big fan.
