I'll probably pick this up if there's some cool bonus stuff, but the Hoffman version will remain my reference copy...

Maybe the second bonus disc of the Deluxe Edition will be a copy of the Canadian budget disc or the original Japanese Pressing. That would be true "value added" content.

Who's Next is one of the Who reissues where the bonus tracks really don't work.
I can't imagine what they can do for a "Deluxe Edition". The only thing that might work is if they try to recreate "Lifehouse", but I don't see that happening.
All I know is that I don't like the sound on the single disc version. If this is like the deluxe "Live At Leeds", the sound will only be worse.

I was thinking the same thing, MatrixMan. Whichever mix is used, count on our ol' pal (Half-)Astley to render the new package unlistenable.

I wonder if "The Relay" will be among the bonus tracks. Wasn't it recorded during the Lifehouse/Who's Next sessions?

I have yet to see anything official, but I've heard rumblings about it for awhile now.

Any bets on if they'll include Time Is Passing in stereo this time?

Hopefully it would have earlier takes of Bargin, Baba, etc. Didn't they record a band version of Mary?? Also, what happened to all of those Quadrophenia and By Numbers outtakes? Strange how every reissue is packed w/ outtakes from the sessions except for Tommy, Quad and By Numbers. Sure the first 2 or conceptual but there has to be a place for 'em somewhere.

Well, I suppose they could do something like this:

Disc One: Who's Next (remixed version, including remixed Won't Get Fooled Again, which previously appeared only on the best of CD), plus additional Lifehouse material recorded at Olympic Studios (Let's See Action, I Don't Even Know Myself, Join Together, The Relay, Water, Too Much of Anything, Time is Passing, Pure and Easy)

Disc Two: Record Plan outtakes (Won't Get Fooled Again, Behind Blue Eyes, Baby Don't You Do It, Getting in Tune, Love Ain't For Keeping) plus live recordings from the Young Vic April 26, 1971

Or maybe they'll forget about the live material and simply try to compile all of the studio material that was recorded during that period. I think there may be a few Entwhistle songs that might not have made it onto the reissues.

The story I've heard with Mary is that the master tape literally fell apart. Not sure how true that is, but...

I believe there are 4 Quad outtakes. One (We Close Tonight) got released on O&S, while the other three sit unreleased.

Rumor has it that Glyn Johns has the tapes with the outtakes for Who By Numbers, although I don't know how true that is.

I've never heard the Record Plant versions of Getting in Tune and Won't Get Fooled Again. Are they any good? Maybe the multitracks for Mary still exist?

Do you know w/ the other 3 Quad outtakes were? I remeber reading on Odds and Sods that By Numbers was remixed from *copies* of the multitracks. Any reason why Pete, Astley, McPherson, et al could not of got the tapes from Johns? I want to hear that band version of Blue Red and Grey!!

I don't know what the other outtakes are.

Rumor is nobody even bothered asking Glyn for tapes...

I don't remember much about the Record Plant version of Getting in Tune. I haven't listened to my Lifehouse to Leeds boot in ages.

The Record Plan version of Won't Get Fooled Again is radically different from the version on Who's Next. Leslie West plays guitar on this track. I'm still surprised that this didn't make it onto the Who's Next reissue or Odds and Sods, and I'd be dumbfounded if it wasn't on the deluxe reissue.

I'm not 100% sure that the Who actually recorded Mary. But if they didn't, it would have been one of the few Lifehouse demos that didn't receive the full-band treatment. If Mary was recorded, the multitracks may exist somewhere, but I don't think Pete has them. Around half the multitracks for the album tracks on Who's Next are still missing. The multitracks from the Record Plant that had fallen into the hands of bootleggers were recovered. But unfortunately when Olympic Studios closed, a lot of tapes just ended up in the dumpster, including it appears, some of the Who tapes.

Dolstien, thanks for the info!. I'm sure they will screw the mastering up but I'm still excited about the possibility of hearing some unheard performances.

Okay, I know this has been covered a thousand times (I remember it from the DCC forum), but how do I get my hands on the Steve Hoffman remaster? I just checked HMV, and they have a version that's catalogue # MCABD37217. Is that it?

"Bank Holiday" and "Electronic Wizardry" (I think) were the other titles mentioned by Astley in an ICE article years ago. Wasn't "Four Faces" (from the Quad soundtrack) also recorded during the original Quad sessions?

You said Brother! I like your nick-name for Astley! Aint that the truth. His remixes to digital aint happening. I picked up the Quadophenia he redid in the early/mid 1990's and was very disappointed. I later picked up the Mofi gold and found that to be much more natural sounding, although no silk purse by any means. I compared the opening "rain" on Love Reign Or Me on both. The Mofi sounds like, well rain, the Astley sounds like bacon frying! Then I had to sit thru review after review calling his work on the remixed version painstaking yada yada yada. Just glad to see others sharing my opinion.

To paraphrases "All Men Are Liars" by Nick Lowe:

"I knew a man named Jon Astley
    His Who remasters sounded ghastly!"

(of course, Nick was singing about someone else, but you get the idea)

Electronic Wizardry was an instrumental written for Lifehouse. It was released in 93 as the b-side to Pete's "English Boy" cd single.

Astley did mention a Quad outtake with a similar name in the ICE article I remember. It may have just been titled "Wizardry" without the "Electronic" part. Something like that.
