I love a lot of The Who’s music, but these two records stand out for me. On a given day I might prefer either one... Sometimes I feel Quadrophenia wins for the sheer bold ambition of it, on other days I have to give Who’s Next the edge for song strength.

It’s a tough call. What do y’all think?

I gotta go with Who's Next, particularly when you fill it out with a lot of the other Lifehouse material, most notably "Pure & Easy". I liked Quadrophenia a lot when I was younger, but I rarely revisit it these days.

I can't choose... But Quadrophenia has to be one of the best Rock albums of all time. However, I'm pretty sure most people that dabble in The Who and rock of the past might not have heard it all the way through. Kind of like Sell Out, when people start buying the back catalogue they could easily overlook that album which I think is their third best, behind the two already mentioned.

I really don't care much for these compare 'em threads but here's this: for me, WHO'S NEXT is a great collection of individually wonderful rock songs. QUADROPHENIA, otoh, is the soundtrack to my coming of age and the single most meaningful and inspiring LP in my life. If only one album gets to go in my coffin, I don't even have to think about it.

I agree, they are rather trite, and pitting two major classics against each other is very sophomore level critique.

Quadrophenia is amazing on so many levels: writing/story line, production, individual performance, AMAZING band! It's hard to beat by anything imo. Who's Next is classic but Quadrophenia gets my vote.

Who's next should have been a double and Quadrophenia a single.

Who's Next by a nose, but only because its one of the greatest rock albums ever created. The fact that its close is testament to how good Quadrophenia really is.

I think I like Who's Next better, but I've heard those songs so many times that I don't get the urge to listen to it very often. It actually took me years to really warm up to Quadrophenia, so it's less familiar to me and has more hidden corners to it that reward repeated listens.

Well, if I can only have one Who album I'm going with Live at Leeds. But between these two, I prefer Quadrophenia. I'm not typically big on concept albums but Lord does Pete make it work on this record. A great, relatable story and killer songs to match.

Reading Catcher in the Rye and listening to Quad when I was 16 made me realize that if I really was weird as $hit, I had great company.
