I know we have art rock and progressive rock and there are some great artists in those sub genres including Kate Bush, whom I love. However, rock and roll should never be 'serious'. It should be fun.

Wow. That is so completely wrong that I don't even know where to start.

  4. I agree - we've established that The Triffids and The Go-Betweens produced better music from the same land and time period. Close the thread!

That came out before The Boatman's Call, which is widely seen as his finest moment and top rated album.

I admire that, at the age of 60, his hair is even darker than it was when he was 20. Period. End.

Seems like the guy has big issues with aging, decay, death, irrelevance. “September of my Years” said it all a lot better, IMHO. Actually, would love to hear Cave cover that.

I like a lot of his stuff, but no, I would never go as far as to say he was the greatest of our time. What time are you referring to btw? Is it at this moment in time, or a particular era? I notice you mention the last 30 years, but you’re missing out the Birthday Party, which I think is easily as good, if not better, than his solo output. I think you have to include the whole body of work, and put it up against others, to judge whether someone is the greatest or not.

the triffids, go betweens and the bad seeds may all be indie bands, but comparing their output is futile

If he hadnt died in 1993, id say Frank Zappa would hold the honor. But you make a very strong argument for Mr Cave.

Now for me to actually go listen to him aftwr years of hearing his name...

rather different to francesco ... with cave, you kind of need to know what you're in the mood for.
for abrasive rock blues - from her to eternity
more refined rock - tender prey
quite beautiful balladry - the good son, no more shall we part (i lean towards the good son)
up tempo balladry, i guess - henry's dream, one of my favourites
gospel, rock - abattoir blues (another of my favourites)
spacey, loop, poetry from a deep, dark, emotional place - skeleton key

early days - semi-psychotic, noise punk - birthday party - mutiny

"Better" music? I'm not sure Robert Forster would agree with you. It's one of the more annoying aspects of forums like these, people constantly come up with "better", "harder", "faster", "stronger" blah. Like 12 year olds.

  14. Ouch. I've expressed an opinion. Sorry if I offended. I'll use less defamatory language next time to keep you happy..... :)

Weird that you think it can't be both.

I have plenty of fun when I hear "serious" songs like "The Mercy Seat" or "Tupelo," and there's still a seriousness of purpose under "fun" songs like "No ***** Blues."

  16. I have to agree with the comment about Nick Cave's hair. Is it the most seriously dyed hair in rock music? Period. The End. (This could be a thread.) He added a moustache a few months back - the moustache was more interesting than Skeleton Tree.
I think McCartney's up there with him for ridiculously dyed hair though!

I say this in the context of some-one who likes Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, has most of their albums and seen them live many times - I don't think he's the greatest musician. And he does go on a bit.

    I think it’s a good thread
Start one up on The Triffids and Go Betweens
As an Australian I like the idea of talking or arguing if that is what we are doing about the best Australian bands on an American site
Even worse I could never get anyone to listen
With the exception of St Nick almost no one in Australia has heard of The Go Betweens or The Triffids
Or these bands Dick Diver or Halfway country rock n roll or the best country music singer in Australia Corrina Steele so invisible that even mr google struggles to find anything about her

I'm a big fan of Nicks work.
Only regret I've never seen him play live.
This is one of Nicks ear worms I wake up with regularly.
