The anxiety about stereotyping between, say, The Boys in the Band and Will & Grace is what led to bland gay characters like Matt on Melrose Place, where they were sort of notionally gay but had to be sexless and behaviourally indistinguishable from straight people (and played by straight actors).

To me, Jack's character was saying, sure this kind of gay character is a "stereotype" but there are also tons of gay guys who are just like this and they're hilarious, and let's celebrate it. Even though the show was timid in some ways -- giving him a weirdly conservative wardrobe and rarely showing him with a boyfriend/lover (though he would talk about offscreen guys).

Quite right. And face it, is America really ready for a true portrayal of LGBT people outside of cable?

I know a lot of guys exactly like Jack. And at least Sean Hayes is actually gay.

Boy, did they ever plug Messing's last series--superlatives everywhere, 'the new best series on tv' etc etc
The local TV critic reviewed the first few eps and said it was absolutely horrid.
I guess the critic was right, she's back and doing more than infomercials.

He is now, but he wouldn't talk about it when the show was originally on the air.

I worked on the show on and off for 7 years, and even we were kind of surprised. I don't think the new show will refer to this "20 years later" ending, which had Will's son and Grace's daughter meeting in college. It's a good question as to whether the show will even reference them having children at all. The recent political sketch from last year didn't mention it, almost literally like it was just another chronological episode.

  7. I'll certainly give this new run a chance, even if only for nostalgia sake. I thought the original series was often very good, though admittedly I've only seen about have of it (and only in syndication). What can I say, I almost never watch anything the first time it's on, and usually only catch things years later (if then, even).

The Will character always reminded me of a former boss I had back in the late 90's, who wasn't exactly closeted, but wasn't especially far 'out' at work.

Really quite a good show for its time, as best I'm remembering.

Good one! I had completely forgotten about that. The last I heard that was definitely a go.

I was thinking of "Still the Beaver", myself... but it may be "Twin Peaks"

NBC must have a lot of faith in the show, they've renewed it for a tenth season before the ninth has even aired.

I'm looking forward to watching it. I've always preferred it to Friends.

I think it will do well (again) for NBC, it has a built-in audience from the get-go.

  21. I never like Friends even in the slightest. Don't know that I ever made it through more than 3-4 episodes.

I didn't see much of Will & Grace when it first ran (maybe a couple of the last seasons), but I do remember catching it in syndication at one point, and really liking it. (Again, about 10x better than Friends.)
