The first two were excellent but is he too busy with his[Marvel]films to do another or lose interest?

RDJ is currently working on the new Doctor Dolittle movie and the Perry Mason reboot for HBO. Last I heard filming for Sherlock Holmes 3 was set for late 2018.

I recently saw a picture of Tony Stark and Doctor Strange which for some reason made me wonder exactly the same thing.

We love these films, and have been keeping tabs on it. They want to make sure it is the same quality as the first two. All parties want to make a third one. They have called a writer's room to produce the script. Filming indeed could start by the end of this year.

I liked the first one, but thought the second was just a case of "Let's add more," and was a real mess.

I'm really looking forward to another Sherlock movie. I think Jude Law's Watson is my favorite portrayal so far. Martin Freeman's seems to be written a little too... dumb?

Also digging that Iron Man and Dr. Strange are both Sherlock Holmes in other realities - there are some interesting crossover opportunities here!

Jude Law is set to play Mar-Vell (the original Captain Marvel) in the upcoming Captain Marvel movie. Which means that both Sherlocks and both Watsons are part of the Marvel universe now.

And wouldn't you know, the announcement hit today...

Warner Bros. announced on Monday that a third installment in its “Sherlock Holmes” franchise starring Robert Downey Jr. as the famed detective is in the works, with a release date planned for Christmas Day 2020.

The film will be a follow-up to the 2011 film, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” which grossed $545 million worldwide.

Warner Bros Sets 'Sherlock Holmes 3' for Christmas 2020

But the article also says (interestingly)...

There is no confirmation whether Downey or his co-star, Jude Law, will return to the series.

I think when you have a star like Robert Downey who is making $100 million on the biggest film in the world at the moment, it's tough to negotiate and schedule his services.

These films can't hold a candle to the brilliant PBS series with Benedict Cumberbatch!

I totally agree. Those Robert Downey Holmes films are a farce. Some of the Sherlock series is too, but not all of it.

...and you think the CGI driven Downey films are better story driven films? o_O

I wish that they would call these movies anything but Sherlock Holmes.

I enjoy both equally. The feel is different enough, that they are apples and oranges.

Downey and Law have spoken of their like for the characters and first two films. I am confident they are supportive and will appear.

The most recent Robert Downey Holmes film was not very good (to me).
