Another show came to mind is Faith No More opening for Billy Idol. It seems all they did was scream obscenities to get a rise out of the audience and just played loud. The only time they simmered down was to sing the Commodores 'Easy', they made such a big deal about that.
A shouty, rap act that supported Basement Jaxx, in 2003. The only act that's made me want to leave the venue, beofre the main act has come on stage. Otherwise I've been reasonably blessed with some decent supports over the years (Interpol, Polyphonic Spree, Athlete, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Kaiser Chiefs, The Veils, Y & T, Accept), however Belthane Fire also stand out as particulalry poor. A heavy rock act utilising a double bass, never really did it for anyone in the audience.
Re: Worse Opening Act You Sat Through... I saw them too...not exactly sure who they opened for...it was either, Nazareth/Ted Nugent or J.Geils/Joe Cocker...I think. Yes, they were bad.
Re: Worse Opening Act You Sat Through... Lucky bastard! In Paris that year, the band opening for Neil was Porno for Pyros... I would have been very happy to see Dinosaur Jr instead. Then, a few years later I saw Neil again and Alanis Morissette opened for him. That was probably the worst opening act I've sat through.
This thread reminds me of when I discussed Miles Davis with my boss. He is not a Jazz fan and he tells me he saw him once when he opened for Neil Young at the Fillmore and thought it was terrible 1 1/2 hours of making noise (in his opinion). Yes he was at the show which was released several years ago as Live at the Fillmore East, the only documented live show with the Bitches Brew band. It's all in the eye of the beholder.
Wow. I saw the Cult open for Aerosmith probably on the same tour a few years back. They were great. No one cussed the audience here. Band seemed to be enjoying themselves. Crowd loved it. The Cult were a great warm up for Aerosmith. __________________________ Mother's Finest - They opened for the Who in the Winnipeg Arena on the Who's Who By Numbers tour. IIRC, that was fall 1977. I thought Mother's Finest were horrible. Not a good fit for the concert. There were pockets of fans standing and applauding. My friends and I weren't one of them. We were there to see the Who and would have been happy with no opening act.
Re: Worse Opening Act You Sat Through... At least you didn't have to sit through Slash's Snakepit like I did as the openers on this tour. Horrendous.
I saw the Fudge open for the Rascals, excuse me, the YOUNG Rascals at the Steel Pier and I thought they were great too. While there are many here who might hate the Fudge I do think that their sound and interpretations did influence many a rocker. Tim Bogart's bass playing also influenced a lot of musicians. Anyway, I can't remember any truly awful opening acts (I usually walked out) but I did witness some opening acts get extreme hostile treatment from crowds - The 'Year of the Cat' dude was almost literally thrown off the stage opening for Hot Tuna at the Capital Theater in NJ after insulting the audience. I saw Aerosmith had everything but the kitchen sink thrown at them at Schaefer Music Festival in NYC. Whoops, they were the headliner and Rory Gallagher was the opener!!!
Re: Worse Opening Act You Sat Through... I also was unimpressed by DM, but I marveled at the flag guy. Hey, at least he had a lot of energy! What an odd job to have...
Acts that stand out to me as bad: I'll always have a bad impression of Erasure when they opened for Duran Duran in 1987. Just awful. Maybe I simply didn't get the joke, but I thought they were a parody of a parody, and they were unlistenable. I also have very negative memories of Fun Lovin' Criminals opening for U2 in 1997. Seem to recall some terrible band called Beer for Dolphins (I think?) opening for Steve Vai in 1996. That was a night of terror - I don't like Vai either, as I went to the show to hang out with a friend...
Two from 2005,both at the Troc in Philadelphia: Dead Meadow opening for Sleater-Kinney Kinne Star opening for Swing Out Sister Both intolerable, couldn't wait for their sets to end.
Re: Worse Opening Act You Sat Through... Yup, same guy. But Lee Michaels was not involved with Sweathog.
that "36 point" surrounded a picture of their one and thank god only "album" like a picture frame musta been gorted as far of not making "heads or tales" I sort of listed a whole bunch of reasons why [I thought] they were terrible I also forgot to add their drummer walking away from his drum kit that already HAD a mic to the mic next to the bass/noise player to scream more incoherent mess through the amps certainly made anything else to follow sound better yuck!
Mudvayne, Limp Bizkit and Deftones, all before Metallica. I was out of beer money by the time they started too
You kidding me? I love Garbage - they'd be in my best-ever opening act category! Their shows opening for U2 are what led me to like them...
Lobo, opening for Three Dog Night in 1971. "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo", and a 28 minute drum solo.
Re: Worse Opening Act You Sat Through... I truly feel sorry for you. That easily beats my 3: Ace; Ashford & Simpson and Journey.
Third Eye Blind opening for the Rolling Stones. Hands down, 60 arena/stadium concerts later, the worst.
At the time, Lone Justice opening for U2 in the Meadowlands. I will never forget the screaming vocals from the lead singer and the way she kept swinging her arms and jumping around. The sound was horrible and they got booed after every song. Skip ahead about 10 years and I really got into Maria Mckee because of her song on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, If Love Is A Red Dress. I picked up her solo albums and LJ albums thereafter but had not remembered they were the band I saw open for U2. A few years ago I was in Tower Records Outlet and came across a LJ video and when I got home and watched it the connection was made: the screaming, arms swinging, jumping all over - this was the same band I was so turned off by years ago. I rummaged through my old ticket stubs to verify this and there it was. My bad. Even if I was into them at the time, I probably would not have enjoyed it because the sound was so aweful as it is for most opening bands in arenas and stadiums.
Could it have been Red Red Meat? I saw the Pumpkins in '93, I believe, and they opened up for them. They're very loud, with a lot of feedback and such.
I thought this might be a fun thread: What is the worst opening act you had to sit through to get to the headliner that you really wanted to see? For me, no contest, Bow Wow Wow opening for The Police. Just horrible! They gave you many excuses to go for snacks and beer. Then you would look for someone to talk to at the concession stand to prolong you having to go back to your seats. So whats yours? Rick g
When I read that I instantly thought of Dream Theatre opening for Deep Purple (1998) and Dream Theatre opening for Yes (2004). Pairing them with rock pioneers, made it all too clear for me.
