    (Yes, I'm bored today).

    BAD STEREO MIXES:

I just played SWLABR off of "The Very Best Of Cream" CD and man, does the mix suck. The intro when the drums come in has to be the most lackluster intro in history when it should have been the best. No top end, no nothing, weak, too low in volume, panned over to the left. Dreadful.

SOMEBODY TO LOVE by the Airplane comes in second and of course GET OFF MY CLOUD and SATISFACTION by the Stones are right up there, crucial backing tracks too low in mix, all the way to the left, no top end, the usual RCA deal of that era.

Of course for the Beatles it has to be I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND in stereo. This was four track, no excuse for a s*** mix. The mix on A COLLECTION OF BEATLES OLDIES is so bad, Eq'd for some weird reason to have no top and no bottom, just midrange (unlike the mono hit mix which is fully balanced tone wise) and of course the backing track is way too low in the mix.

    Horrible versions!

    Revised 1/26/15.

SWLABR on CD has never sounded quite right to me.. I've got an old beat up Atco 45 of it that just smokes.. A real kick in the pants.. Hearing it on the Best of Cream CD.. not so much..

there is no reason for any of those
songs to even exist in stereo

Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. He must have had long arms to play the guitar in the other channel. Not to mention everything zooming around when the harmonica comes in.

Fortunately we have the MFSL gold CD with the mono mix of "Swablr." Wasn't that long ago when so much of this was no longer available in mono, but there's a ton that still need to be done.

"A Hard Day's Night" - any track, totally anemic in stereo; just sad.

First Pull Up, Yhen Pull Down-Electric Hot Tuna. There is exactly 1 moment of stereo separation on the entire LP--on Candy Man, when the cymbal hits start. The rest of the LP is dead center. I have always wondered if the quad 8 actually had any further separation, but I've never heard it.

Which mix? 1963 or the 1966 (now standard) one?

Those Stones stereo mixes of Satisfaction and Get Off Of My Cloud that were issued on the London West German Hot Rocks CD.

Not the worst but "The Weight" by - "The Band" is very lopsided favoring the right channel.

I Feel Free by Cream completely sucks. You literally can't hear the rhythm section.

The mono mix is quite anaemic as well. Best sounding version of that song for me is the demo, at least you cam hear the drums.

If "Words" by the Bee Gees meets your definition of a "rock" song, it has to be among the worst stereo mixes in history. Barry is singing in your ear, and someone is playing piano down the street.
