Haha! They went all out with the "9 carat gold flash" and "automotive grade material". Hahahaha! I'd buy it for the ethical reason of "allowing the music to breathe more naturally". My music has been asphyxiating up to now I guess :(

Get rid of the Crosley and buy an Audio-Technica AT-LP120 or better or look for a better Dual, better Garrard, Technics, Pioneer, etc.

You need to replace the CoBra drive with a CIBA motor. Most Crosley owners ended up having to do this. :D

A nasty CD player probably still won't harm the discs though...right?

No, it won't, so buy with confidence! Don't forget to add on an expensive DAC!

The Optimus 3400 portable CD player from Radio Shack [in production during the early 1990s] had a SPDIF out. I built a massive, 50 amp, filtered battery supply. The t.c. electronics m-2000 [intended mainly as as a reverb box, turned out to be a first class digital Swiss Army Knife, set me back $1200 back then] resulted in a really fine sounding CD player.

Radio Shack - was there nothing they couldn't do? :)

Think I also saw the same form factor, buttons and SPDIF out on a AWIA player, the Rat Shack model doubtless simply changing the paint job and logos.
I realize this thread was created for folks to sneer at the cheap Crosley players, but this does also indicate that it's easier to make a good cheap CD transport than a good cheap record player. The thread also indicated that hard-core vinyl fetishists must have pretty deep pockets in order to spend $5000 for a record weight.

CD's so awesome, everyone should be happy!

And to be sure, not all of us have $5000 to spend on a record weight. I'm currently trying to decide if it's worth my spending $30 on one.

You have to be pretty hard core to spend $5000 on a low-level accessory that might improve playback. In any case, the mash-up of high and low in this thread suggests more about tribalism and classism than sound. And while the toppermost of the digital food chain can get pretty pretentious too . . .

. . . few entertainment devices are as pretentious and overbuilt as a "true high-end turntable."

These kinds of turntables and $5000 clamps are just so far away from anything I'll ever own, I really can't relate to it. I think I can continue to enjoy vinyl in good conscience without having to answer for the astonishing audio equipment excesses of the 1%. And I'll never own a Crosley either , and it's a fair bet that no one who posts on this forum and has a serious interest in vinyl owns a Crosley. Most of the references to Crosley on this forum seem to me like, "Whoa, dude, you like vinyl, but Crosley exists! Aren't you ashamed?" To which I can only

Page one and we're already in vinyl vs. CD land. This must be some form of neurosis.

    Get well soon, folks.

Those aren't turntables, they're sculptures that happen to play records.
