One advantage to "collecting" WE gear is that it is a collector item that has appreciated in value AND, in the mean time, one can actually enjoy the use of the amp. All of the people I know who own collector items (items not rebuilt, only "temporarily" modified for modern use, such as bypassing certain input gain stages), use them all of the time. Western gear is extraordinarily robust and will not go bad with heavy usage. A friend just bought a 124 amp that is in perfect working order that is totally untouched--all the resistors and caps are original and in good working order after all of these years.

WE 300B amps were selling for about $5 to $8K each 15 years ago. So, the amps have appreciated greatly. I never see the WE 300B amps on ebay now. Most sales are acquired thru individuals. That is knowing someone willing to sell their WE 300B amps.

But is this appreciation for the quality of the audio, or the low supply in the used market?

There are quite a lot of old Western Electric amps out there, so it is not so much rarity as it is a somewhat low supply that is being offered to the market and high demand because more and more people are recognizing that the gear sounds very good, by any standards, not just good for the times when they were made.

I particularly like the WE 124 and 133 amps (both use 348a driver tubes, the 124 uses 350 output tubes, the 133 uses 349 output tubes). If you have high efficiency speakers, both of these are terrific sounding amps.

My uncle bought a three bedroom place in Fair Oaks (Sacramento) on a half acre for 80 grand in 2010.

To bad all this was going on over the summer. I'm sure that fellow had room for 9 more NOS WE 300B tubes. Found them recently and a good friend has them listed on here.
I'm sure that 100K the Japanese fellow payed for the WE amps didn't make a dent in his bank account. A top executive at a major corporation could make that in monthly bonuses. I've read of rich audiophiles renting or buying spaces to house their stereo's in places like Toyko. Filled with WE gear to boot. To those folks, money is no object if they get what pleases them.
