Is there a particular fascination with Deep Purple in Russia?

When I did work in St. Petersburg in the early 90s, I was asked to try and find "Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" on vinyl for one of our associates. Interesting.

 

When did the Berlin Wall fall? It's amazing that it hasn't taken long for American's image of Russians to change from a dumpy woman standing in line for potatoes to this.
