I can't wait for the new Twin Peaks revival to come out too so everyone can bash that as well.

I for one am really liking the new X-files series. Would I like more mytharc eps? Sure, but I thought this last episode was great and really liked the second one as well. They definitely felt like X-files episodes to me.

They seem to have taken quite a deliberate "no big deal" approach to these episodes -- instead of being a big six part epic event it's just "Here's a few more episodes of The X-Files like we used to make -- some alien ones, some monster ones, a funny one." Just a regular season of the show condensed to six episodes.

I was watching an old episode on the weekend and remarking on how big and baggy their suits looked. They were swimming in them!

We've gotten very used to the idea of TV shows being like long movies broken up into sections, so it feels quite weird to go back to the episodic approach of The X-Files where there isn't much continuity from one week to the next and the style and tone varies widely too. Not that there weren't serialized shows when the X-Files was on (and more episodic ones now) but I think the overall TV paradigm has shifted quite significantly in the binge-watch era.

In the interview with Darin Morgan I read he said that when he worked on the show originally they didn't pay attention to or even have any idea what Carter was doing in his alien episodes.

Indeed, but so much time has gone by prior to this season that to simply pick things up, re-open the X Files, and get everything up and running again within the space of 45 minutes, then with very little continuity in the episodes (so far) between 1 and 6, it feels kinda... disconnected.

Perhaps it would have been better for the first and second episode to have bee a 2-parter, then 3, 4, and 5 can be whatever, ending with 6 as a closure somehow.

It did seem too early in the run to do a comedy episode -- it should have been fourth or fifth. I think they moved it and the previous episode up and sent them to critics to counter the bad reviews episode 1 got.

Yeah, I thought they missed an opportunity for what could have been a great quick reaction shot of Mulder comically in agreement with Guy Mann as he was explaining his predicament in the cemetery and mentioned how since he had become human he "spent the rest of his day helplessly watching—porn."

As this was the third episode of the X-Files I've ever seen, I don't think I'm qualified to critique this as an episode of the series. But as an episode of television science fiction/horror this was batsh*t crazy (or batcrap, if you will).

And I, for one, am perfectly OK with that approach.

Considering they are using the same 20 plus year old intro it would seem to be exactly that.

I have to admit, it was too bright even for me, and I usually fight with producers who want to make stuff too dark. John Bartley is a brilliant man -- he did a great job on Lost for many years.

I do not really look at the series being only 6 episodes long. I take the long term view that there will be many more episodes after this one. I assume that they will get at least one more season. I hope there are longer seasons to come. I am enjoying this revival very much.

I think one difference from the original show is that they shot in the summer so it isn't grey and wet in every scene.

I don't really care that the new shows are flawed, the original series was too. It still just fits like an old pair of shoes.

Okay, so that's why I've been getting a very "summer" vibe from the look of the show.

Anyways, I'm fine with this 6-episode run if it proves the show is still viable. However, I think if they decide to do more, they should double the number to 12 episodes. Going back to a full 25-episode season is not going to work anymore in this day and age.

That third ep was loads of fun. Wife and I laughed out loud a number of times.

  18. Just watched it. Terrible. High key lighting terrible. Acting terrible. Pacing terrible. No suspense and the show seemed like the party they did in Kumnel

But the idea of the episode was good

The only difference for me was that the Kimmel bit was funny, particularly when they were waiting for the 90s computer with America Online to boot up.

  22. Wow. Looks like LA light. Global warming ? It was hot and sunny in Seattle all summer. Unusual.

  23. I thought the writing in the hands of the right director could have worked better. I enjoyed it but agree that the pacing was all off and as we know comedy works based on pacing. I wouldn't say the acting was horrible....just very affected.

The lighting was too bright to me. Way too often, I see overlit night scenes and I immediately ask, "hey, where's all this light coming from?" Much too unnatural.
