I tend to think of The Lone Gunmen as a separate show.
Also I noticed that Mitch Pileggi's (Skinner) name is finally in the opening credits of season 9.

David Duchovny talked about the return of The X-Files on David Letterman to be aired tonight, 3/31/15. He revealed the tidbit that the Cigarette-Smoking Man will be returning.
"Star David Duchovny told CBS Late Show host David Letterman on Tuesday that the sci-fi hit’s Fox reboot will include supportive clench-jawed FBI assistant director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) and the villainous Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis)."

I really hope CSM is only returning for flashbacks. They already "killed" him a couple of times now, and his death in the series finale seemed pretty definitive (direct hit with a missile).

    My exact thoughts.

William B. Davis has aged quite a bit since the series, though, so it might be difficult to make him look younger for flashbacks... So, I fear he's gonna come back for real, though I hope otherwise.

    What about The Lone Gunmen?
Just saw the season 9 episode where they were supposedly killed.

Nothing more than what was reported in the article that I quoted above, that Skinner and the Cigarette-Smoking Man will be returning. It was very brief. He was there to promote his new NBC show, Aquarius.

CSM is dead, I don't want him back, Why would anybody want him back?
He's burned up into nothing . You can't resurrect ashes?
Davis has aged, I see little point, in bringing him back.

Yeah they're going to have to get really creative to bring CSM back and not have it seem completely contrived.

CSM will appear as a force ghost to Mulder and be played by Hayden Christensen.

The character's name is going to have to be changed to "E-Cigarette Smoking Man" or "Nicotine Gum Chewing Man" to keep with the times.

Exactly. The second film was a pretty big letdown in comparison.

One of the main things that makes the first movie better (besides just being a good film overall) is the fact that it contains events and information that are crucial to the series' mythology story arc, and that it acts as a link between the 5th and 6th seasons. The second film just felt like one of the series' stand-alone "killer of the week" episodes and did not serve to tie up any of the loose ends or questions that remained unanswered at the end of the series.

To me it seems like it was rushed, probably as I was watching it between Seasons 5 & 6.
Does the first movie work as a stand-alone movie?
Does the second movie address anthing from Season 9?

While the first movie is indeed watchable as a stand-alone film, it certainly makes more sense in its intended context, as a link between seasons 5 and 6.

As for the second film, the only series-related aspect I can remember it briefly addressing was:
the fact that Scully and Mulder have a son together

The hardest episodes for me to watch were seasons 8 & 9 when Mulder wasn't there.

The second movie was made so long after the end of the TV series that I really think a stand-alone film was their only option. The problem with that film wasn't the monster-of-the-week structure, it's that it wasn't a very good one.

it was a really weird time for an x-files movie. i don't think the story in the second film was at all bad, and the movie itself was actually quite good. what was missing was a decent effort to get mulder & scully back into our consciousness. the whole thing just felt "off". skinner's appearance, complete with jaw clenching almost did it, but the movie just didn't quite feel like an "x-files" movie.
