This is my candidate for the most explosive 4 minutes plus of pure rock and roll! Entwistle and Moon are truly amazing, going toe to toe with Townsend's slashing guitar chords!

It’s a great performance of that song. When I found out it was a cover, I went and listened to the original and was shocked by how tame it is by comparison. The Who completely transformed it into a totally different song. Even The Who’s own studio version from Odds and Sods isn’t nearly as explosive as the Leeds performance.

  5. Best track on Leeds. Not that any of the rest of them are slouches.
Pete talks to film maker Murray Lerner starting at about 4:00 minutes in about YMB from the Isle of Wight DVD extra.

My favorite is the studio version on The House That Track Built sampler LP (and on loads of bootlegs). It finally appeared on the big Tommy deluxe box, stripped of the reverb. I prefer it with the reverb. The studio version on the expanded Odds & Sods was a big disappointment.

A stunner. I remember when I first heard it, opening Side 1 of the original (and best) version of the album. Wow!

Easily the best live track I've ever heard. Pete is just on fire.

Wow I just happened to listen to that for the first time today and now this thread!
Can someone recommend Live at Leeds on CD?
I am listening to the 2001 deluxe ed (on CD-R).
Should I go for that or seek out an original non RM version?

I'm quite happy with the 4CD/1LP box set that I got around Christmas time many years ago.
It includes the full concerts of both Leeds and Hull. Also containing the 7'' Polydor single of 'Summertime Blues'/'Heaven And Hell' plus a great book and a poster.

The 1995 14-track MCA CD is much better soundwise. I've never heard the 6-track MCA CD from 1990 (?)

And to think young men thought they had it bad back then!

Seriously though, this performance is positively apocalyptic.

The 2001 deluxe is horrible. Probably the worst version you could get. The single disc from 1995 is far better.

There is a great version, Ottawa 1969 I believe it is, where Pete's guitar cuts out for a minute. John and Keith keep on playing and it is awesome. Just bass and drums, full tilt. Best rhythm section ever.

Look for the boot Pure Rock Theater. The version of YMBs on this CD is the definitive live version of the song IMO.

I think that one is from the performance at the Young Vic, on the deluxe Who's Next release.

I agree with everything else you said.

It's an incredible performance, i've just got a hold of the HDTracks version of Live At Leeds from 2014. My god, what a difference from the original Deluxe Edition!

I'm in the middle of compiling my favourite Who performances (Live and in Studio) and for me these Live At Leeds performances in particular are the best i've heard to date.

    Heaven And Hell
    Young Man Blues
    Summertime Blues
    Shakin' All Over
    Amazing Journey
    Sparks

but it's all just fantastic, exhilarating stuff all around. I want to blast it around the house whenever i'm listening to it!

The mastering sucks on the LAL 2001 deluxe edition. Townshend even called the fans c--ts for complaining about it. However, he was more involved with further releases.
