If the idea is to make an album, then I'm paying attention to time and not making it any longer than 72 minutes. Here's what my favorite single-disc Rush comp with the one-track-per format would look like, with attention paid to the best way to sequence.

    Force Ten
    Spirit of Radio
    Analog Kid
    Dreamline
    Presto
    Xanadu
    Distant Early Warning
    Territories
    Animate
    Malignant Narcissism
    Tom Sawyer
    La Villa Strangiato

As much as I love Rush, I'm just not a fan of the era of music that preceded their formation. I like songs from that era, but this collection for me was nothing special or unique.

I don't get much more out of it than I get from the Blue Cheer version.

Revising my list, I'm removing anything from Snakes & Arrows. I just can't see any reason to include any song from that album among what is best about Rush. Listened to it again this morning, and the album sounds like one long drone.

I wanted to use Force Ten as that's one of my favorites, but High Water needs some more love. It's truly one of the band's most underrated tracks IMO.

In chronological order, not necessarily what I think are the "best", but what some of my favorites are:

    1. Finding My Way
    2. Fly By Night (or By-Tor)
    3. Bastille Day
    4. 2112
    5. Xanadu
    6. La Villa Strangiato
    7. Natural Science (or Entre Nous)
    8. Red Barchetta (or The Camera Eye)
    9. Digital Man (or The Analog Kid)
    10. The Body Electric
    11. Manhattan Project (or Grand Designs)
    12. Lock and Key (or Time Stand Still)
    13. Show Don't Tell (or The Pass)
    14. Roll the Bones
    15. Alien Shore (or Cut to the Chase)
    16. Totem (or Limbo)
    17. How It Is
    18. Far Cry (or Armor and Sword)
    19. Headlong Flight (or The Garden)

Sorry for cheating with all the alternate choices, but Rush is my favorite band and OP asks the impossible. :)

Dig in. That's a good song, but that album has some of their finest moments in that era, IMO.

Thats one of those albums with a good amoubt of filler, but the highs are SO high it totally counterbalances it, lol.

Show Dont Tell (most badass riff ever and so much fun on guitar)

    The Pass

    Presto

    Superconductor

    Available Light

    War Paint

    Chain Lightning

Actually, just take out the trio of Anagram, Red Tide and Hand Over Fist and and youd have a 39 minute killer album with no filler at all!!!

It just grew on me over time. I really like middle section how it builds up to the guitar solo. Really though, I think all of side 1 on Roll the Bones is fun to listen to.

If this is a serious question, get a compilation and see which tracks you like. Then get the original album(s) with the tracks you like.

70's Rush is different than 80's and beyond Rush, but it's all good.

  22. Scroller

Scroller Hair Metal, Smooth Jazz, New Age...it's all good

I'd say to get Moving Pictures immediately if not sooner...

Yes, It was a serious question. I figured in a thread like this I would get good suggestions. I don't like Geddy Lee's voice, but I guess that just "goes with the territory"...
The band is excellent technically, and I realize that. Is there a good compilation available?

i don't have all their albums, so that's the best i can do. if we could put complete pieces, rather than sections, it would look a little different
