I have been enjoying “3 Silent Classics By Josef Von Sternberg” lately. I am firmly smitten with Evelyn Brent now.

That is insane. Thanks for the heads up! Isn't that like 4 bucks a movie? WOW.

The only thing that I hate about this set is the packaging. At least Zatoichi can fit on a shelf. Me wonders if a standard edition will come later?

  4. You know I didn't even look at the packaging as I just want the movies.

I went through a Bergman period during my college years and beyond in San Francisco. My friend managed the Surf Theater, one of the original art houses in America, and I was able to see all the Foreign and American classics for free over the years. All before home video. They have a week of Begrman, a week of Kurrosawa, Truffaut, Fellini and so on.

Some of Bergman I loved and some of his films bored me to death, however they were all visually stunning to me. I can't wait to re visit the ten or 12 I've seen before along with the others I know very little about.

I must admit that being a huge Woody Allen fan got me to revisit Bergman over the years. Probably his favorite film maker and one he's emulated on more than one occasion.

I have only seen Persona and The Seventh Seal. I enjoyed both incredibly. So I am looking forward to a blind buy. There is a lot of directors that I have to see everything, and I know this will be one of them.

The packaging may seem juvenile, but I can't stand not being able to display properly. Just my thing. I hate printing customs because my printer just does not stack up. All this won't stop me from getting this great work, so I will just have to find a special place for it!

Can anyone recommend some newer titles from them? So far I've got the following:

    Che
    A Hard Day's Night
    Tampopo
Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas
    Moonrise Kingdom
    The Graduate
    The Royal Tenenbaums
    The Game
    Thief
    Traffic
    Midnight Cowboy
    (on its way)

I like the newer/more well-known titles. Are there any that are must-haves?

A couple postings of mine had images removed (Thanks Photo Bucket!) so I've decided to show my entire Criterion collection here & will continue to update
as I get them. In case anyone is curious, I like posting images so you all know exactly what they are in case you want to get one for yourselves.

Do you mean recent criterion editions? Or movies made more recently?

Phoenix was great. I have it on my buy list after watching it on Netflix and it blew me away.

In terms of recent releases, I really enjoyed The Breaking Point and it had not a lot of features but really good complementary ones. The Rebecca reissue looks fantastic with tons of extras.

Just pre-ordered the Bergman box during the 50% sale. My wife says she'll give it to me for Christmas, but I am happy to split the cost with her (if she'll let me.)
While the dreamer in me wanted a UHD box of the "big B", the realist in me says: "Be happy. What you are getting is a treasure."
A Bergman marathon during the winter months....how appropriate :agree:

Criterion never released any of the Saw movies under their label, nor did they ever release a title on VHS.

Can't even get a new copy of this one unless you get lucky. It used to be my favorite CC title. A bit too talky for my taste now. The big group scenes are still thrilling.
