Andy Smith .....Like a good pinch of snuff......

Must be honest, when I read '1983' my initial reaction was 'So.....what did happen musically in '83....?'. Remembered the obvious ones, 'Script....', 'Pyromania', and 'The Crossing' as they remain favourites to this day. Had to check out Wiki for a reminder of the rest. Found a few more I bought (below).

    Yes '90125'
    Paul Young 'No Parlez'
Ian Hunter 'All Of The Good Ones Are taken'
    The Jam 'Snap!'
    Bowie 'Let's Dance'
    Big Country 'The Crossing'
U2 'Under A Blood Red Sky'
    Dylan 'Infidels'
Marillion 'Script For A Jester's Tear'
Tracey Ullman 'You Broke My Heart In 17 Places'
    Def Leppard 'Pyromania'.

I also remember being disappointed by releases from UFO ('Making Contact') and Uriah Heep ('Head First'). Neither rocked my world as some of their previous epics had.

Enjoyed them as they were released, and still love them today:

    R.E.M. - "Murmur"
    The Police - "Synchronicity"
Aztec Camera - "High Land, High Rain"
    Marshall Crenshaw - "Field Day"
Elvis Costello - "Punch The Clock"
Nick Heyward - "North Of A Miracle"
    Spandau Ballet - "True"

Didn't buy them at the time (not having enough money or not enjoying them in 1983), but loving them today:

    Tom Waits - "Swordfishtrombones"
Bauhaus - "Burning From The Inside"
    Paul Simon- "Hearts and Bones"
Talking Heads - "Speaking In Tongues"
    Michael Franks - "Passionfruit"
Pink Floyd - "The Final Cut"

Bonus points awarded for remembering Brian May's 'Star Fleet' LP! I have that tucked away in the loft somewhere. About time it had an airing. 'Nuff respect, that man!

I am surprised to see I only bought ten records from 1983 at the time (ie not counting those I've acquired since). It was a strange time in my life - I was unhappy in my work and looking for new direction. The records are:

    Joan Armatrading - The Key
Aztek Camera - High Land Hard Rain
    David Bowie - Let's Dance
China Crisis - Working With Iron and Steel
Elvis Costello and the Attractions - Punch the Clock
Rickie Lee Jones - Girl At Her Volcano
    Robert Palmer - Pride
    Shriekback - Care
Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues
    The The - Soul Mining

Not a classic year for me by any means but Soul Mining stands out.

In 1983, Dean Martin released the studio album "The Nashville Sessions," which featured a couple special guests such as Merle Haggard and Conway Twitty.

Nice to see a couple of votes for Y & T. They never seem to get the love they deserve.

Rock Candy have just re-released Mean Streak along with Black Tiger and Earthshaker. Solid albums all!

  13. I've always loved that Brian was able to sneak the brief ascending part from the middle of Star Fleet's title track into the segue between One Vision and Tie Your Mother Down on Queen's Magic Tour, which brought his side project to a much wider audience (who probably didn't even get this reference) when the group's second night at Wembley Stadium became one of its most reissued live shows! A genius move...
