Which audio adjectives do you gravitate toward the most? Here are mine:

    warm
    smooth
    soft
    emotional
    romantic
    clean
    rich
    lush

Here are some that are generally considered positive that I've learned not to love:

    neutral
    fast
    lean

Musical, which means nothing! Clean, warm are two others.

Neutral which is one I've learnt to appreciate.

Most others I tend to disregard. 'Emotional' and 'romantic', as mentioned above for instance, being two examples that tell a reader little.

I once had someone complain that a mix I submitted sounded too "Catholic".

I once would have agreed with you, but I had an experience a while back that changed my perspective. I was audition two amps from the same manufacturer, switching back and forth while the rest of the system remained constant. We listened to the same piano trio over and over. The amp that I preferred really seemed to communicate a sense of rhythm and movement. Through the other amp it seemed sluggish and a bit boring. Now this could definitely fall into the category of PRAT, but since rhythm is oh so important to musicality, if not most important, the amp that better conveys rhythm is by default more musical. So providing this is what the reviewer hears when they refer to gear as musical, and of course they might mean something else, I definitely get it and it's definitely possible.

My error. I use musical a lot. It means nothing in real terms beyond what it means to me. No help to the reader, but arguably better than the other ones I mentioned!

It used to mean pleasantly rolled off in the highs and romantic rather than flat and neutral. I still hear it used that way.
