Believe it or not, but, this classic piece of music from L.A. (I'm talking Los Angeles, not Louisiana), found in nearly every home in America back in the mid 60's, actually came from New Orleans, written by Naomi Neville, who was actually Allen Toussaint in disguise! Just one of many "fake" names that he used in songwriting, with this one using his mothers maiden name!

As I'm not well versed in music from New Orleans, I'll just add that one of my favorite Dylan albums, No Mercy, was recorded there.

I don't know if you've encountered this, but thanks to the Interwebs, you can listen to WWOZ online; it's a great station and I'm sure you'll make some new discoveries.

Soooo much to discover, as evidenced by the above posts. Here's a modern-day band based in Nawlins....just though I'd tie in The Ocean since it seems to be an issue with the new LZ:

Lee Dorsey - Get Out My Life Woman - (1966) nice loping N.O. groove with terrific piano playing by Toussaint

Lee Dorsey - Yes We Can album - (1970) Toussaint produced record where every track was a winner. Included the original versions of Sneaking Sally Through The Alley (done by Robert Palmer), Riverboat and Occapella (done by Van Dyke Parks) and the tile track (Pointer Sisters).

Irma Thomas - Wish Someone Would Care, Time Is On My Side and (best of all) Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (an early Randy Newman song sung sublimely by the queen of NO soul.) All from 1964. And the first track made the pop top 20 during the height of Beatlemania! Not bad for a deep southern soul track.

one final one Robert Parker's Barefootin' - been commercialized to death but the original with that great guitar work still shines through.
