Kieslowski's "Three Colors" trilogy is hard to beat, though Kubrick's run from Strangelove to Clockwork is right up there.

Many great choices have already been mentioned. I'll add:

    Alan Parker

    The Wall
    Birdy
    Angel Heart
    Mississippi Burning

My favorite movie of his came right before The Wall: the 1982 Shoot The Moon, with Diane Keaton and Albert Finney. Not a characteristic Parker film, though.

And you can include "Ship of fools", which I really liked and was nominated for an Oscar for BP

I wasn't sure if "Drums" came out before "Stagecoach", or if "Tobacco Road" came out after "HGWMV". I should check IMDB to see if they have the release dates for all the films. (And I've never seen "Drums" or "Tobacco Road", so I don't know about their quality)

You should see 'Louie Bluie,' his first feature. It's a documentary about musician Howard Armstrong. It's great, really entertaining. Armstrong just had a real zest for life, and the movie captures that spirit.

Wikipedia accurately lists the filmography of each director in the correct order and has the release dates.

Drums is good, but not great, but I've only seen it once, and at that time I didn't feel like it lived up to its potential with names like John Ford, producer Darryl F. Zanuck, screenwriter Lamar Trotti (Young Mr. Lincoln, Ox-Bow Incident, Yellow Sky), Henry Fonda, Claudette Colbert attached to it. Could change my mind when I see it again.

I don't recall whether or not I've seen Tobacco Road, but I should probably check it out if nothing else to catch the lovely Gene Tierney in another film.

Great lists. My god, “Splendor in the Grass” is a beautiful film. A sentimental favorite.

I'm not sure De Palma ever had a great one-film run! :hide:

I looked over his filmography and I can’t find a better one than Vertigo/North by Northwest/Psycho, first mentioned in the third post.

    YMMV.

that's a great one, couple more; dial m/rear window/to catch a thief, and the man who knew too much/the wrong man/vertigo, also psycho/the birds/marnie (maybe) .....some early ones would also make great trios. he usually had an average film mixed in thereL torn curtain (which I feel like I should like but just laid there) broke his streak.....

    Stanley Kubrick...

    Lolita
    Dr. Strangelove
    2001: A Space Oddysey

From the controversial to the mind blowing all 3 of these films are essential to any comprehensive movie collection...

IMO the finest triplet by any director
