You need a turntable like this to play your 78s: The Technics SL-1200G Turntable – Analogaholic, The Technics Project, Turntables | TONEAudio MAGAZINE
It seems apparent that the action has shifted to Weize's own label. It must have been something more than Richard wanting to "retire".
Bear also has a fair number of sets OOP that originally came out a generation ago and I wish they'd bring them back into print for those who missed them the first time around. Agree that it seems RWA seems to be getting more of the action these days. Obvious wish nothing but success for both Bear and RWA as we the consumers benefit from the fruits of their labors.
Speaking of RWA, this is some great no-frills rockabilly: The release date is supposed to be June 16th, but Bear Family is already selling it. The music was sourced from tapes that were delivered to KTCB as opposed to live radio broadcasts, so the sound is quite good. Even the photos of Narvel Felts going to town on the old slap bass and electric guitar are worth the price of the CD. No curveballs in terms of material, but it's all first-rate.
I was looking at Mychaels facebook page. Lefty Frizzell will have a big book about 300 pages. Lots of demos/liveshows included.
I seem to remember having a number of excellent rockabilly compilation CDs from this label, or am I mistaken?
The 27-volume That'll Flat Git It series. Indispensable. They also have compilations of Arizona rockabilly, Canadian rockabilly, and some assorted label comps with a fair smattering.
On vol 4 "Festival" records.Lots of the artists later became members of metall rock bands..Ronnie Dio recorded later as vocalist for "Deep purple" in 1974. Later started hard rock group "Rainbow" Otis Blackwell wrote lots of hits for Elvis Presley.
You can add some from ACE records like these: Ace Records Various Artists (King) - King Rockabilly - Ace Records Various Artists (King) - King Rock 'n' Roll Vol 2 - Ace Records
I am mildly disappointed that RWA's new series on the Bell Records label has only 12 songs per CD. But it looks very cool. I once had a major pile of Bell singles, but let too much of it go to a friend.
Regarding Lefty Frizzell, I'm curious to know what previously unreleased live recordings were issued by other labels after the Bear Family box set?
Woody Guthrie - The Tribute Concerts | Bear Family Records Here's the Woody Guthrie-related project that was mentioned some time ago.
Ok friends, most of the action seems to be happening on the Richard Weize Archives thread. RWA just might be our new favorite label. Your favorite RWA (Richard Weize Archives) label releases
I have never seen any, though some may exist. His fame has waned, so there isn't the market for radio material as there is for Hank Williams. But I will buy any that I see.
Humphead issued a 2-CD set of Marty's MCA recordings (20th Century Drifter The MCA Years) in 2014, with 37 of the 39 released masters. Two were not available for inclusion since Marty allowed MCA to release them on a 45 single (Shotgun Rider/These Are My Souvenirs, MCA 40425) on condition they would never be released on an album. Another 15 songs were recorded during the MCA contract period, but they left with Marty when it finished. 3 of the 15 were released by Columbia on "Lost & Found" in 1994 while the rest are still in the Robbins archives.
That is sad, and may be a part of the reason why Bear Family never issued the "rest of" Marty Robbins.
