Nice steal! I may have to purchase that box set next since I only have this Duane Eddy box set:
I'm curious if most (if not all) of you are planning on keeping your box sets for the rest of your lives or if there are plans to eventually pass them off to others or sell to other BF collectors? I know some of you have certain box sets that I'd be interested in down the road!
There are a handful BF items I may part with some day, but I hope to keep the vast majority as long as I can. Just a couple box sets (none of which are OoP) that I've never clicked with, along with a few less-impressive Rocks series entries.
What is the consensus on the best place to get Bear product in the US now?
What a great find! Hopefully this Duane Eddy set will get you hooked and prompt you to buy the other Duane Eddy BF box set in addition to the back catalog of The Ventures.
Great question. As several of our friends on this forum predicted, prices on BF titles here in the U.S. have increased. In some cases, I've seen the retail price of a box set double in price.
Depends. Some I would never part with!
Why not put a Want To Buy ad in the classifieds?
I'm not sure I'd ever want to sell any of mine, I see my collection as my archive of, mainly American, music. It'd be like the British Museum flogging The Rosetta Stone. That might be a bad analogy as there's probably a few people who'd think they shouldn't have it in the first place!
But yeah, agree, try the Wants.
The above list was posted more than a year ago. Here are some other boxes that seem to be out of print:
Little Jimmy Dickens - Country Boy
Various Artists - Tennessee Jive
Ernest Tubb - Let's Say Goodbye Like We Said Hello
Sons Of The Pioneers - Songs Of The Prairie
Does anyone know of other Bear Family boxes that are out of print now?
Just found out about this set of Hamburg Star Club performances, presumably from the early-to-mid 60's. Comes with a 90-page hardcover book in both English and German, and goes for a king's ransom.
Various - Die Ariola Star-Club Aufnahmen
Audio clips: Die Ariola Star-Club - Various Artists | Songs, Reviews, Credits | AllMusic
It is definitely too expensive for me. But if anyone kidnapped a King and asked only $270 for his safe return, the Queen would probably say, "Keep him! He's all yours!"
Also out of print at the moment:
Hank Locklin - Please Help Me, I'm Falling
Porter Wagoner - The Thin Man From The West Plains
A nice set. I got my copy years ago and need to listen again. That's the thing about the BF box sets, there's so much music you always have more to listen too. I've never reached the point were I'm tired of listening to any of the sets.
Currently I'm going back through the Del Shannon box again. Great sound, great music. I feel a big Fats Domino urge coming on starting with "The Fat Man".
There was talk of Bear upgrading the Fats Domino set, but no talk in quite a while.
I'd like to see Fats get a new box done like the recent Jerry Lee and Chuck Berry sets. I don't think it'll happen though. Something has happened at BF and even though they may release a new item every once in a while I feel like they are done. I hope I'm wrong but many things seem to be out of print and there is nothing new beyond a couple huge sets that I'm not really interested in.
At this point, I'm still buying multiples of available Bear Family box sets and 1CDs solely for the purpose of gifts and preservation. Also, I always check for product changes (new colors/artwork) and make sure each title is complete and an actual replicated silver CD. However, I'm learning to be grateful for what BF have given us in the past and to not have many expectations for new artist-focused box sets or comps in the future. I still believe in miracles, but it's certainly going to take one to bring us back to where BF were even in 2007. In many aspects of life, change isn't a bad thing. For BF, change is far less desirable.
that Left Frizzell set may end up being the most valuable box if the upgrade is dead
I don't have the Lefty box so I do hope it is reissued.
Another one I'd like to see released is the single disc Thunder Road soundtrack. Seems like it was cancelled due to a picture in the booklet that they didn't have the rights to publish. Tear it out and release it.
And to think I've passed up on a couple eBay auctions in hopes of that reissue showing up.
And it's everything you can expect from BF, I love this set, I picked it up about half retail price second hand.
He is known for his early Honky Tonk stuff, but I really love his 'Saginaw Michican' period into to final 70's recordings
the most. Highly recommend this set, if an updated version doesn't appear.
The "Bear Family style" box sets
The Florida Box
The Texas Box
The Michigan Box
have been HEAVILY DISCOUNTED on Amazon USA recently
Check current prices.
This sale is still on on all three boxes. If you want it, this seems to be the time.
Yup. I remember that talk. Held me off of buying the current set. Would love sets from T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker and Bo Diddley. Sad to hear that the gears at Bear seems to have ground to a halt...
There's only 3 state boxes?
