Outstanding band. All three records are a ridiculous melange of sounds and styles. I mean tuba, trombone, banjo, accordion, hammered dulcimer & fiddle all at the same time? But it worked superbly. They were always a blast live too as your video shows.

I always thought that the accordionist was called Sarah Allen but I might well be mis-remembering that. Anyway after The Barely Works, she and banjo player Chris Thompson formed a similar combo called Big Jig who were pretty decent in their own right.

I saw fiddler Alison Jones busking in Oxford in the late '90s with members of The Lost T-Shirts Of Atlantis (an excellent skiffle/punk trio) but that aside I've no idea what any of the band members have been up to recently, if anything,

Great question ....for me Enrico Rava, a wonderful trumpet player ! Each of his releases (many on ECM) are very different, great bands , unique sounds but unmistakingly his music
He should be headlining festivals everywhere

When I lived in Boulder I used to go see this band The Reejeers and their live shows were always a blast. Eventually they broke up and the lead guitarist formed Devotchka and the lead singer moved out to Massachusetts and started Fancy Trash.

There are so many indies but the best I've ever heard was a band from Canada called Sully. I bought their first record for a penny at Amazon and they should've been big as Nirvana.

He's certainly not the least-known musician, having been around since the Chameleons in the '80s, but his fans are generally described as a "cult following" -

Tiny Grimes, arguably the second electric guitarist on record (dig his crazy four string lead). Based in the NY area he was with (and recorded with) The Cats & The Fiddle starting in 1940 and later played with Art Tatum and then fronted his own Rockin' Highlanders (which also featured star sax man Red Prysock) beginning around 1948-49 and recording with them in 1950

Blue Rodeo - big in Canada - virtually unknown in the US - also where Sarah McLachlan got her start.

I live in a town with a 24/7/365 jazz radio station, can't remember hearing any of them on it. Read about, sure, but I've only heard them 'cause I went out of my way to.

Karen Dalton. Great sixties folk lady. Really cool twelve string player. Sings like Billy Holliday from Kentucky. Genuine as can be. All the Greenwhich Village crowd dug her. She has a down mood but i really love her. Just a great singer and guitar player, to me. Only heard of her a few years ago even though she was around in the sixties.

I learned about her through an online thing, Aomeba Records, What's In My Bag, which i Love. It was Cheech Marin's segment. He told a story where his daughter always tries to out hip him by turning him on to someone new. She put Karen Dalton on expecting him to say who is this and Cheech said , oh , I lived with her in LA. The daughter was flumoxed. Cheech is real hip on music, he chose lots of old country stuff. As an aside Chong was in some interesting bands going way back. Both guys know music.
