Oh geeez... gotta keep it at five, huh?

Here are my favorites de jure (though I'm sure my opinion will change even before I finish the list...

    Nick Saloman
    Alex Lifeson
    Jimi Hendrix
    Robert Fripp
    Tony Iommi

Nick because I've been a huge fan since discovering the Bevis Frond a few years ago.

Alex because I've always appreciated his non-conventional approach to the lead guitar.

Jimi because, well, he's Jimi and he created a body of work that is so unique that it can't be equalled (plus, having died at the top of his game ensured that his legend would be forever cast in stone).

Robert because it takes real confidence and audacity to play in such a heavy and complex manner while sitting cross-legged on a bar stool.

Tony because sometimes there's nothing like having your ears assailed by a guy with prosthetic fingers playing a distorted SG.

I find it quite difficult to narrow it down to just five at the moment ~ I suppose that most recently I am intrigued with the work of Jeff Beck, Al Di Meola, Roland Prince, Bill Connors, and Earl Klugh.

Okay, so I bent the rules a smidge by including both Slash and Izzy together. But for my money, neither is the same without the other. (That interplay!)

I'm not that good with coming up with lists, mostly because I find it hard to place musicians in order of preference at times but someone I recentlyish discovered who I think is great is Mick Green. Over the years I obviously heard tracks he played but didn't really know who he was. But awhile back I came across some live clips of The Pirates in 1977 on Youtube and "discovered" him. Great playing. Reminded me of Wilko Johnson, who I also think is great.

I also love Dickey Betts' solo's during live versions of "Ramblin' Man" I downloaded some live shows and just have that track on a playlist. Just three at the moment but I'll search Youtubes just to hear that song live. Never get tired of it.

If I had to fill out the list, I'd have to say Page for sure. Hubert Sumlin is someone I always loved ever since I was a kid and first heard his playing and had no idea what is name was. Last one...so many to choose from but Hendrix would be a big one for me. An obvious choice in many ways but I'd pick him because he made a huge impact on my early music development. I think I like his rhythm playing more than his lead :)

There are others that I admire a lot too and could easily make a top 5 list on another day. E.g. Tom Verlaine and so many others mentioned in this thread.

That's awesome. RT is amazing. This wit reminds me of how he got around to doing 1000 Years of Popular Music - totally worth a listen.
