    Can't name fewer than ten.

    Freddie Hubbard
    Art Farmer
    Dizzy Gillespie
    Don Ellis
    Lee Morgan
    Donald Byrd
    Tommy Harrell
    Terrence Blanchard
    Thad Jones
    Wynton Marsalis

  3. Monk was considered technically inferior by 'the cognoscenti' but I listen to Monk way more than Oscar Peterson (or the cognoscenti).

    Isn't cognoscenti Italian for 'clueless'?

Good points. I think we're close to being on the same page about this. I agree that Chet's color wasn't a problem for him back in the day, but I'm not sure about now. The "narrative" I speak of has IMO an effect today on what remains in CD bins, what gets mentioned on TV, what gets played on college radio stations. Ask a twenty-something in non-GMO skinny jeans what they think of Miles and Chet. I think the "narrative" is why they'll say Miles is great (even though they've never listened to "So What" all the way through) and have never heard of Chet.

I'm sure it "outs" me as leaning toward a more pop/commercial genre, but I'll always be fond of Jonah Jones, Herb Alpert, and Diz...

  13. Well, if I can't say Miles or Satchmo, I guess I don't have a favorite trumpeter. I like Lee Morgan, Harry James and Donald Byrd, take your pick.

What do you think of Doc Severinsen's Command LPs? Kenny Baker?

    In my limited jazz scope:

Charles Tolliver - The Mosaic Select of his big band recordings is flat out awesome.

Woody Shaw - he's been listed many times in this thread and for good reason. I just recently picked up his Rosewood CD and greatly enjoy it.

Carmell Jones - Again my exposure comes from the Mosaic Select series, of which he's paired with Harold Land an awful lot - and which is an incredible pairing. I love their translations of folk songs.

Dizzy Reece - Picked up his Blues In Trinity from the Hoffman classifieds. He's paired with Tubby Hayes which is a great match.

Sweets Edison - Another one mentioned several times in this thread. I grabbed the AF SACD with him and Lockjaw In Copenhagen and he really steals the show. I tend to gravitate toward saxophone first, over trumpet, but Sweets brings it on this disc. Between this one and the Tolliver set, these are my favorite trumpet sounds thus far (excluding Satch and Miles, of course).

So many others had better jazz creativity, but nobody had a sound like Doc's. For sheer trumpet sound, 2:42 on this old video. Gives me goose bumps every time:

    Lee Morgan

I rank Lee over Miles and Diz so easy answer for me.

Seems like everybody has already been mentioned so I will also include Blue Mitchell and Kenny Dorham which get a little overlooked.

Nice to see some love for Enrico Rava and Roy Hargrove on here also.
