I met Don Ellis a few weeks before he died in 1978. We talked about his quarter tone four valve trumpet, about playing wind instruments through effects pedals, and about arranging for big band jazz. Humble, quirky, brilliant, kind soul. Left us too soon in his early 40s.

I THINK I have steered clear of cornet:

    King Oliver
    Jabbo Smith
    Tommy Ladnier
    Sam Morgan
    Henry Red Allen

  4. I hear you. It's cool to like someone 'cool'. And almost heresy these days to speak of Miles in anything other than hushed tones. He was probably as much if not more of a prize jerk as Chet could be away from the music, but that's an whole 'nuther subject, and not why we're here on this forum. Not being a 20-something college student residing in the States I couldn't address those points with any informed response, but yeah, Chet's music deserves a hearing. Then again one poster put up a list of twenty or more trumpeters and NOT ONE was European. Makes you wonder...

Tomorrow, I might have listed Kenny Dorham, Roy Eldridge, Bix Beiderbecke, Sweets Edison, and Dizzy.

    and the next day .............

How on earth can you limit it to five, or any number, if you're a fan of the music?

Sal Marquez should get at least an honorable mention for the Waka Jawaka album.

Candoli was one of my favorites when I lived in LA in the 70s. I still remember those late nights at Donte's listening to Bob Cooper on tenor, Frank Rosolino on trombone, and Conte on trumpet. Best jazz I ever heard live.

P.S. Not trying to detract from the topic. Used to be a trumpet player in my younger days. Have seen Al Hirt, Maynard Ferguson, and Wynton Marsalis live. Just always loved the trumpet playing on that album.

Somehow, I think that if Bill Evans had never been involved with Miles Davis, many of the hipsters and elitist critics would pay a whole lot less attention to him. Now, Bill Evans is a God in my world, but I believe there is truth to my comment.

Don't forget Bix Beiderbecke (coronet, but virtuosity still applies) and Bunny Berigan. Both died way too young.

Has somebody listed Clifford Brown as their #1 through #5 yet?

I got two Clifford Brown LPs on Emarcy first pressings in excellent condition for $1 today!

(Actually, I seriously enjoy many trumpet artists, and don't rank them. Chet was so incredible at spontaneous improvisation.)

    Re: Clifford

Recently picked up the Jazz Messengers A Night @ Birdland discs and his playing is phenomenal. Trumpet is so ubiquitous in jazz, and there are plenty of masters, so very hard to limit to 5 favorites.

I'm having a bit of anxiety that Diz is not getting mentioned. I may have been guilty of that--forgot who I chose for my five!
