Beastie Boys Criterion is the all-time champ IMO.
Queen's Greatest Hits 1 is also great.
Tenacious D - the Complete Masterworks (cheating slightly...;) )

    Hi Jeffrey-
I goofed on that one. I was thinking of the VHS (which I watch at least once a month). It's one of the rare VHS tapes in my collection that is still "in the rotation" since nearly everything I see at home is on DVD. If you haven't seen this documentary , I recommend it highly!

    Here's a review I found on Amazon.....

This is it folks. This is as close as you'll get to a John Coltrane solo, and hence, according to some, as close as you will get to God in this lifetime. Not only can you hear the notes, but you can see the riveting intensity that consumed Coltrane when he was playing. All the great jazz players can play lots of notes, but Coltrane can tear you up with one note. In addition to ferocious runs up and down the horn Trane plays lots of long searing notes. Just one note, but the attack, the tone, the intensity, the release, are unparalleled in jazz. If you are new to jazz, listen to these notes, they embody the essence of Coltrane, they will tell you all you need to know, for now.

In the tape of "So What" the camera is right in Miles face as he finishes his solo. The picture is perfectly clear, you can see the minutest detail of the expressions on his face as he creates in the moment classic jazz. As he finishes he steps aside as Trane moves up to the mic, playing a few casual notes. Then, immediately, Coltrane reaches white hot intensity, playing long screaming notes alternating with arpeggios defining his harmonic concept. This is it. The Ultimate. It is interesting to see the other players nonchalantly standing about as Trane plays, Occasionally one will look over. The world had never heard music like this before, and Trane was scandalizing critics and fans by the thousands, but these guys were cool. What a moment!

The video is about the music, and are several extended cuts included, along with commentary by musicians that played with Trane, this commentary is not too compelling, but, it does give some idea of how Trane's contemporaries related to him. The only way I can think of to make it better would be to make it longer. Another astounding thing to me is that this footage of Trane in action exists. It appears from this video that there is lots of it. How about a sequel, now that we really need one!

I like the DVD edition, first, because it's digital, indestructible, etc., and second because you can have immediate access to the individual 'chapters' making up the disc without scanning through the commentary, etc.

Outside of any Beatles video, in no particular order:

Concert for George - great musicians playing great music with no ego tripping
Bob Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert (laserdisc) - killer versions of Dylan songs
Monterey Pop - when rock was still young - Hendrix and Ravi
Kid's Are Alright - great fun
Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge - just before they became COMPLETELY robotic

    In no particluar order:

Badfinger - "A Riveting And Emotionally Gripping Saga" Director's Cut (Pioneer Artists)
The title sums it all up perfectly. Gary Katz's 1997 documentary, with interviews, early promo videos and TV performances(Beat Club, Midnight Special, Kenny Rogers' old variety show Rollin' on the River - let's see that show on DVD!)

Off the Charts: The Song-Poem Story (Shout! Factory)
Jamie Meltzer's fascinating story of this "peculiar concoction of American commerce, musicianship, and poetic longing." An impressive presentation with too many extras to list.

Nancy Sinatra - Movin' With Nancy (Image)
A great variety special, guest starring Frank, Dean, and Sammy as well as Lee Hazelwood("Some Velvet Morning" in 5.1 is a must-hear) - with commentary by Nacy and Jack Haley Jr., original commercial spots, and bts footage.

Ennio Morricone - Arena Concerto (Warner Music Vision)
Arguably the world's greatest living film composer conducting music from 20 movies, from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly to The Mission in room shaking DTS. With thorough documentary and small ensemble rehearsal footage that's worth the price alone.

The Old Grey Whistle Test Box Set (BBC Worldwide/Amazon exclusive)
All three volumes in a great big box. Volume 1 gets props for having Emmylou Harris, Tim Buckley, and Captain Beefheart; Volume 2 has the advantage of both Siouxsie and Montrose; Volume 3 gets points for turning my kids on to Supertramp and Fairport Convention. One band that's missing is Can, which is thankfully included on the...

    Can DVD Box
An embarassment of riches; the Free Concert film, two documentaries that include Old Grey Whistle Test and Top of the Pops footage and are 80+ min apiece; 5.1 mixes of three tracks, with interviews and making of docs for those(as well as the original tracks in uncompressed PCM audio); discographies, a history of the band, biographies of various collaborators; Brian Eno's tribute short; excerpts from the EPK for the Can tribute album; removable English and French subs and more. To top it all off, most of the contents of the Can Box Book from '99 are included as a DVD-ROM supplement.

Is that more than five? My math skills are slipping.. :)

    Honorable mention:
Gorillaz - Phase One: Celebrity Takedown box set
    Erik Friedlander - Skin
    Guitar Wolf - Red Idol
The Incredible String Band - Be Glad for the Song Has No Ending
Criterion's Monterey Pop and Beastie Boys sets
the Sublime Frequencies series of world music DVDs

Steve Vai Live at The Astoria is my all time favorite Music DVD :righton: While the camera work leaves a little something to be desired, this show is over the top! From the explosive opening of Shy Boy to Virgil Donati's drum solo, from the insane feedback segment of Bad Horsie to Steve & Billy trading off licks on Jibboom, this DVD contains everything I've ever wanted in music. :agree:
