here's a tentative list for me, will likely change when I see other suggestions:

    in no particular order...

    Pete Townshend
    Michael Jackson
    Jimi Hendrix
    Elvis Presley
    Prince
    Brian Wilson
    Bob Dylan
    Paul Mccartney
    James Brown
    Stevie Wonder

I realize "matter" is a subjective word, and my list looks like it could have been copied from Rolling Stone...so be it...I considered a few women, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin, but they do not come close to any of the guys mentioned

Chuck Berry, probably the single most important man in rock history.

Buddy Holly, probably the second most important man in rock history.

Fats Domino, probably the third most important man in rock history.

    7 more to follow.

Some of the lists in this thread are laughable. David Gilmour??!!

Any top 10 list should have at least some members of the wrecking crew - in addition to the 'usual' suspects!

    Glen Campbell
    Hal Blaine
    Joe Osborne

Sorry but I have to add groups because some had two or even three that were highly influential and having one would diminish the influence of some acts.

The Beatles- While some had a dramatic influence on one or two areas the Beatles had a dramatic effect on so many areas. The only act I know who changed the business, songwriting, recording music and how musicians viewed albums all in one act.
    Buddy Holly
    Chuck Berry
    Joe Meek
    Jim Hendrix
    Black Sabbath
    Les Paul
    James Brown
    Muddy Waters
    Robert Johnson
Brian Wilson, sorry that makes eleven but I have so much respect for Brian Wilson.

OK. MJ - as a musician?

Some people see the voice as an instrument. If so - I concur. EP & MJ could be musicians. Just never thought of them as 'musicians' on instruments of any note.

    In no particular order:

    1. Bob Dylan
    2. Brian Eno
    3. Beatles (as a collective)
    4. Chuck Berry
    5. David Bowie
    6. The Ramones (as a collective)
    7. Elvis Presley
    8. Jimi Hendrix
    9. The Rolling Stones (as a collective)
    10. (tie) James Brown, Les Paul, Brian Wilson

I'm interpreting "matter most in rock history" in terms of influence. By way of example, Robert Wyatt, Pere Ubu, Henry Cow, Can, Captain Beefheart, Talking Heads, and Fairport Convention matter more to me than some of these inclusions, but I certainly wouldn't maintain that for a larger audience.

Kansas was not even influential in Kansas.

The OP listed Michael Jackson, so I figured his thread included vocalists. That being said, I think the thread topic is a little vague.

I think my thread could have been 15, because I may should have included Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, and Neil Young, and perhaps Muddy Waters, although for all-around musicality, not simply who "matters" most, I think my original 10 picks hold up well....anyone think David Bowie can hit your top 10?

BTW, Frank Zappa and Ritchie Blackmore are my favorite musicians, but I don't think they had as much of an impact as the the ones that I mentioned.
