Gene Clark. As further evidenced by recent unearthed treasures, he was the equal of any singer-songwriter of the last 50 years.

I mean this as respectfully as I can: Peter Green and Danny Kirwan are still around: the former somewhat active but Danny is apparently lost. For Your (Re)Consideration: Danny Kirwan, the Sad, Beautiful Ghost of Fleetwood Mac

Their curtailed careers deprived us all of some remarkable music. They were just getting started...

This is a very interesting concept for a thread.
I had to think for a few minutes about what it means to "miss" someone I do not know personally, and who's music it's still available.

From the standpoint of considering which artists I would have loved to have heard more output from had they lived, the list has to be very long !
A few of the names at the top would be Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, George Harrison, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Brian Jones, Felix Pappalardi.
With the exception of George Harrison, all of those artists died very young and never had the chance to fulfill their potential. In Harrison's case, he had nearly completed work on the album 'Brainwashed', which to me is in the top 3 best albums of his entire career.

Knowing there won't be any more new Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers records actually breaks my heart.

I disagree with using the word "missed," as I never knew any of them personally.

MJ's death is the only one I witnessed on TV. Was very sad although at that time I wasn't familiar with his cataloge. I knew just a few songs back then.
When GH died I didn't know anything about him & the Beatles.
I wasn't even born when JL and FM died.

George Harrison, Elvis, John Lennon, Andy Gibb. The one who broke my heart most was the passing of Tom Petty - to me, he was one of the most brilliant singer/songwriters of all time for 50+ years.

John Lennon-not only for the music he would have done, but I would have loved to have gotten his world view on everything that has happened these past 38 years.

George Harrison-again as a person as much as a musician.
