It's funny how some pieces hit a sour note with many. I only heard the 901's briefly when new but they were out of my price range so did not listen closely. I thought they looked cool though. It's one of those love it or hate it things.

With me it's the NAD. I'm sure it sounded good with so many fans out there. I had friends that had them and what I remember most is a very high failure rate. I know it's not fair of me but it's what I remember most.

Interesting, never thought of the LP12 as iconic, still using one in my vintage system.
Probably the least digital sounding digital player on the planet. Now that I think about it, it likely sounds more like analog then my turntables. :ignore:

Lots of folks have mentioned the Technics 1200 turntable. I don't recall seeing or hearing it.
Was it really that good ?

I had a Garrard Zero 100, although nifty and it created some big buzz for bit, overall far from iconic. I got rid of it after 3 months and got an Empire 698. Never looked back. Still have the Empire 40 years later. I have 3 variants of the Shure V 15 for it.

I still have an Adcom GFA 555 MK II amp. It really is a great amp, but is very fussy about the other equipment it is paired with. Under the right setup it is killer. The wrong, an ear bleeder.

Regardless, Adcom certainly brought better sound to the masses at a time there was a need. IMO. YMMV.

FWIW Empire 698 had finger tough cuing control a few years earlier, and there was plenty of fine oiled walnut in use on audio items many years earlier. B&O stuff essentially looked like a bad space movie prop ala` Roger Corman. And their sound was nothing to write home about with any of their products IMO.

Agreed. And lets not forget the fairly famous Adcom GFP 750 preamp. Lowest priced class A rated preamp to grace Stereophiles pages ever.

    My list:

    • Michell GyroDec and GyroDec SE- one of the most iconic turntables ever made IMHO, great looks combined with wonderful sound reproduction and very affordable too
    • SME V- one of the best tonearms in the history of hifi
    • Koss Porta Pro- affordable lightweight headphones that has been in production since the '80s- a true classic

Absolutely. My first "audiophile" component and I'm pretty sure the suggested path (although I can't recall if my first TT was a BSR or a Garrard...it was one ore the other; that was a long time and many brain cells ago)

Absolutely an iconic speaker. I had a pair in the 80s. They were the speaker to buy if you were in the US Armed Forces and stationed overseas. Were there better sounding speakers around at the time? Sure. But what a great party speaker they were.
The 901s have been mentioned numerous times on this thread. Definitely an icon.
