How about a thread on cowboy / Wild West songs by rock musicians?

    Ballad of Pancho and Lefty
    The Rope and the Colt

Back to the topic, I've picked my three (and more) but I find this too rich a strand of film-making to actually limit my choices. On the other hand, I find it very difficult to sit through average Westerns whereas I often find something of merit in an average Film Noir/crime film - though I'm more likely to list Westerns in my top ten films than Noirs (excepting Out of the Past).

Off the top of my head these three immediately come to mind:

    Silverado
    The Wild Bunch
    The Unforgiven

There are many more I'd add as possible contenders on any given day including...

    High Noon
    Shane
    The Magnificent Seven (orig.)
Wild Horse Mesa (silent era Zane Grey classic I recently screened)
The Iron Horse (John Ford classic silent era film)
    Ride the High Country
    The Oxbow Incident

For western TV series (that's a thread in itself) I'd start with Lonesome Dove!
Then I'd probably set the ol' Wayback machine for the 50's to the early 60's:

    Lawman
    The Dakotas
    Wyatt Earp
    Have Gun, Will Travel
    The Tall Man
    Gunsmoke
    The Rebel
    and ...don't laugh... Yancy Derringer

Dad always liked GUNSMOKE, so I at least became familiar with it. I suppose it would rank high in my list of western TV series, just by attrition, as I've not been a western fan most of my life.

In the past few years, I've become fond of THE GUNS OF WILL SONNETT. It's only a half-hour, so the stories aren't drawn out, and I love Walter Brennan's "no brag, just fact" line.

Not as good as Lonesome Dove, but the prequel Dead Man's Walk was pretty good even with the abrupt ending.
