I'd have an easier time naming my top 5 genres - even that changes from day to day.

    Five albums? Forget it.

Beach Boys- Pet Sounds - because it's the best album ever made
Pere Ubu -Dub Housing - because it's the best Pere Ubu album ever made
Elvis Costello- My Aim Is True - this is Bob Dylan to me. I've probably played it more than any other record, tape, CD, etc.
Velvet Underground- White Light/White Heat - it made my mind split open
James Taylor's Greatest Hits - when I'm down and troubled...

This is my top five without thinking about it. Give me more time and it's subject to change.

I don't really think in top 5 of all time scenarios, but right now, today, I could probably live like this, at least for awhile ...

    Cat Power - Moon Pix
Beautifully haunting, like a ghost story told through music. It really is her masterpiece. Such a cohesive and emotional work. Gently hypnotic vocals that sometimes seem so fragile, yet possessing an underlying self assurance. Love the way she seamlessly weaves that line from "Amazing Grace" into her own "Metal Heart". Sounds like it was written for that song, especially when she delivers it with that dusky, forlorn voice. Sounds good now, but perfect for a dark, rainy day. Even has the sound of thunder high overhead during one of my favorites, "Say". The vinyl sounds great, and like a lot of Matador stuff from that mid 90s vintage, quite a bit better than the CD. Listening now, and still amazing.

    Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs
What an amazing record, so quaint and precious, and yet so grandiose. Somewhat inspired by the Band's vision of Americana, but twisted up with some psychedelia and a wistful romanticism. Essential, one of the best of the 90s, still. I've been kind of stuck on it lately, can't say when it might end, like being lost in a dream... and you don't want to wake up.

Magnolia Electric Co - Black Ram
Jason Molina is responsible for at least three of my favorite records (and yes, you could probably say obsessions) of the 2000s, but Black Ram is the one that really haunts me since his death a couple years ago, strewn throughout with so many lines that read like an epitaph. Beautiful record. Sad as the day is long. What's broken will become better... if we can..

    Mink DeVille - Cabretta
This one has always been a classic in my mind. Just 10 songs clocking in at about 35 minutes, yet it is sequenced with the fast and slow songs interspersed so that the flow seems to cycle, kind of an ebb and flow. Still goes by pretty fast. I guess it's partly because I like all the songs so much. Nothing to drag it down. Willy has such a distinctive and soulful voice, and a very tight band working behind him. Add in a well written collection of tunes with a couple very good covers, and then top it off with one of the best producers, Jack Nitzsche... yea, they captured some magic on this one.

Brian Eno - Another Green World
One of those records that, for me, kind of defined and inspired a big part of my love for music, kind of like Electric Warrior, or Low, or maybe Remain In Light, the ones that have stayed with me for many years while most others tend to come and go in cycles, or get forgotten altogether. The longer I live though, the more likely that something more recent like Richard Buckner's Devotion + Doubt will be the one, but Eno provides so many memories. That run of records in the 70s is still one of the most amazing in my rock history.

Can't usually say this, but really love everything on both of your lists. Think I may be more partial to other Slowdive records, but no matter, that one will do ok by me too. We either both have really good taste, or ...

With the exception of Animals, which I love, but it's very well known, I find these others (well, the Rush album is well known, too) to be fairly interesting selections in a thread with, to be honest, not very interesting choices. That said, I doubt many would find my top five favorite records of all-time inspiring, either. Still, nice job.
