It's a slow rainy weekend morning, I'll do this again. My Top 3 have been constant for years:

    1. Jon Hassell /Brian Eno - Fourth World: Possible Musics Volume 1

This otherworldly album contains all music past, present and future. The recent remaster is dramatically cleaned up an offers a fresh look at the material, but I think I prefer the original slightly murky and mysterious EG pressing.

    2. Brian Eno - Another Green World

It's just unspeakably beautiful with the synth washes, Percy Jone's fret less bass, occasional mind-searing Fripp solos, and Eno's fragmented consciousness occasionally uttering melancholy abstractions.

    3. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue.

It just is. Kind. Of. Blue.

After this, who knows really, Blonde on Blonde, Remain in Light, Gould's Goldberg Variations, White Light White Heat, Out to Lunch... But lately I've been feeling particularly strongly about:

    4. Nick Drake - A Treasury (SACD)

Sticklers may cry, Greatest Hits, no fair, and to appease them, I would tuck this gorgeously rendered SACD inside my Five Leaves Left case. Beguiling lyrics, haunting vocals, deft and personal guitar work, lush arrangements; Nick's tragically curtailed oeuvre is beyond category.

I came very close to putting Morning Phase on my list, but it and Five Leaves occupy a similar space, so let's turn to:

    5. John Coltrane - The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings

Raise your hand if you've been to the Vanguard. It is a tiny little place. To imagine this much human expression and creativity bursting forth in that cramped maroon room - it must have been overwhelming. The slightly raw live recording does a nice job of putting you in the room. Again, sticklers may cry, boxed set, live, no fair, but sentient creatures must own this music and, to paraphrase Trane, you need a box to fit in that much energy.

My #1 never changes, but after that, it can change from year-to-year - but, here's where I'm currently sitting:

    1. Queen - Queen II

When I first heard this album around 1990 or 1991 while in high school, I was instantly blown away. It showed me how creative rock music can be (I had only been listening to rap music from about 1985 to that point because pop music had become wishy-washy, and rock music had become generic hair bands - rap music at that time sounded more creative to me...then gangsta rap came along and ruined it all - plus I just grew up and my tastes changed). I then got really into classic 60's and 70's rock, and found that a lot of the beats/grooves/riffs that had been mixed into my favorite rap tunes at the time originated from those classic rock bands (and James Brown - haha).

    2. ELO - Out of the Blue

I had actually never heard this entire album until early last year (I'm shocked too). I absolutely love it. So much going on in each song, yet each one comes together nicely as a whole. It's the one album I've listened to the most over the past year, and I'm still not tired of it.

    3. Silverchair - Diorama

My favorite album from the 21st Century so far (Volbeat's Shady Ladies and Outlaw Gentlemen would be a close second...and Wolfmother's debut album). Never get tired of listening to it. Vocals, orchestrations, etc., all great.

    4. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I

Bluesy and bada$$. Just put it on and let it play! Favorite Zep album.

    5. John Williams - Star Wars OST

Like the movie, it transports me away and lifts me up when I'm feeling down. If it had the Imperial March from The Empire Strikes Back, it would be perfection.

Fourth World is a big favorite of mine too, always leaves me mesmerized. Very influential. Maybe more a Jon Hassell record, but not sure it really matters now. Was just listening a few days ago, and became kind of like the day's soundtrack. Might have to do that again this weekend.

You and I both chose to list Another Green World, and I see some other mentions in this thread for Tiger Mountain and Science. Seems like Eno's 70s records have really found a place in rock music history.

Thanks for the descriptions, adds quite a bit to your list, at least it does for me.

    Pink Floyd: Meddle

Azimuth: Light as a Feather and Outboro. Telecommunications and Cascades too. (Always all played back to back, and very frequently too, so it's like 'one album' to me.)

    R. Stones: Black and Blue (Exile)

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King

Deep Purple - Made in Japan

    John Coltrane: Ballads

    Led Zeppelin: 4

    Black Sabbath: first 3 albums.
