Hey, Mr. Clapton sings "Presence of the Lord" by himself since 1970! ;)

    Please explain :shh:
I love this one, a lot.. But I believe it's a blues standard (that was arranged by Clapton and Radle)

Actually I just gave a partial listen to try and elaborate.
It's the verse singing, and less the lyrics after giving a listen.
A higher register of the key would be a good place to start.
IMO great chorus, bad verses. This is just an opinion, I don't wish to try and sell it to anybody.

I sometimes underrate him as a songwriter, but after typing up that list and thinking about all the great songs that coulda made the list, I've just regained a lot of appreciation for EC! I mean, there aren't many other people who could write stuff like "Behind the Sun", "Holy Mother", "Circus" and "High" amongst others and not have them in their top five!

I'm interested to hear your opinion, that'd why I asked you to explain. ;)
Bad verses? What about that? Because of the vocal delivery or his voice wasn't strong enough?:shh:

Glad to hear it! :agree: I've always thought he's good at song writing, he was just too lazy to do it IMO

Yeah thats my feeling more or less, pretty weak vocal, in terms of power and melody on the verses.
I don't want to overstate the point out of respect for the people who consider the song a favorite.
Also as a Clapton fan, I appreciate his honesty and sincerity towards fan over the years. Something that was very evident when he lost his son in the 90s, and his candid reverent comments about music and other musicians.
So with that context in mind, and knowing somewhat about the personal crisis's he had at the time, though IMO a weak vocal, there is emotion to it. This may impact other fans different than it does me, so again I mean to be respectful. I also consider the possibility that the songs performance may possibly have come at the beginning of the sessions, before he a built up vocal strength. There are other tracks on the album with pretty strong vocal performances. Eric is a talented singer.

Thanks for interest in my opinion, if there are any other things I should address, Id be happy to try.
    Peace

I don't know, Jeff. Maybe it was just his style at that time. 461OB and TOIEC are 'mellow' albums IMO.. Yes he could put a little more power to his voice, but I like it as it is. At least he sounds in 1974 better than on Layla. What do you think? :shh:

I think it's a nice crossover of blues and rock. Didn't know it was a cover.

Far be it for me to criticise anyone's taste, and there are some fine vocal performances on 461OB, a fine album too. Over time Eric developed that deeper bluesey voice, which is great, but it wasn't there yet on 461OB. With that development he also became a better singer technically. He himself dismisses his early vocal work, but personally I really like it. The "Four until late" style, maybe his thinnest sound, I love it. So I actually prefer the vocals on Layla, and I think most would. Probably my favorite albums of his are Layla/Self titled/Just one night/Journeyman. Don't get me wrong though I like the rest too. I definitely could of added a few more. Came very close to putting in "Tell the truth" and "I looked away", but my list was getting long. Notice my early career selections with the thin voice. (Easy now/Let it rain) etc..
He really got the power when he gave up the booze..

I like his thin voice too. Used to prefer it over his solo years vocals. Nowadays I choose the latter. :p Ever listened to Dominos' live albums? His voice sounded weak. Seems like he doesn't really know how to sing. Lack of confidence.
