Written by Jerry Lynn Williams, not Clapton.

Also not a Clapton original: written by Troy Seals, Eddie Setser, Steve Diamond.

My bad. Those were my favourite EC songs and not being more than a casual fan was not aware of the songwriters. Thanks for the info.

Understood - that's part of what can make this thread a good one, learning which ones EC wrote! Thanks for taking my post in a positive way.

    Agreed!

Spurred me to do some quick internet searching and although not EC comps, it does appear that he was the first to record them, as opposed to covers.

    Is that correct, B.O.M.?

It is my understanding that the songwriters did not release these before EC, especially in the case of Forever Man, which I know Warner Brothers asked Williams to write for EC. So it could be correct to say they are not covers.

I was going by the OP's post that "Eric Clapton is one of my favorite songwriters of all time. ", so it was about songs he wrote. But you are correct that EC was the first to record.

    Not in any particular order:

    Anyday
    Layla
    Let it Grow
    Bell Bottom Blues
    Got to Get Better...

And not to stray to far off topic, but the fact that EC covered so many songs and people think they are his, is extraordinary. There's something to be said about taking somebody else's song and making it yours.

Also, I've always though of Let it Grow as a hidden gem, weak vocals notwithstanding. ;-)

Don't expect any deep insights from me, I'm just a sucker for such sappy songs. :D nostalgy + in retrospect, maybe the guitar and dobro interplay (no stairway to heaven references too)

Although GT composed the song I always thought Erics performance made the song his.Something akin to what Hendrix did with Dylan.Obviously not of the same magnitude as Hendrix/Dylan connection but you see where Im going.

The point is, I want you guys to post your 5 favorite songs that was written (or co-written) by Mr. Clapton. But I don't mind if you discuss about anything else as long as it's about EC. Thank you ;)

I don’t really think of Clapton as a legendary song writer by any means. It wasn’t really his strength. Most of his popular songs were covers. One of my personal favorites though I don’t see mentioned. Co-written with Will Jennings, Tears In Heaven is a song I’ve always found beautiful and heart felt given the story behind it. It’s probably the Clapton song that’s always moved me the most. I think it deserves mention.
