Grunge and britpop records excluded from this thread!

Tick your faves(top 5 if you have them) from the list and name your personal top 5, which can be outside this list.

Early Radiohead I always took as being tied in with Britpop.

There are too many albums to name. I have to narrow it down by artists or bands that came out with at least one album that I liked in the 90's. Finally, it's going to be more than 5. Not all are "alternative" in the strictest sense and the way we might have used the term back in the 90's but the word doesn't mean too much to me.

    plus
    Lemonheads - It's A Shame About Ray
    Liquor Giants - self-titled
Sloan - One Chord To Another

I could throw a few more anywhere on the list but the Lemonheads album is easily in the top three.

My bad Zach - thank you. I missed the OP's preface and just looked at poll. Consequently, I have edited my post. If I could, I would include "Thrak".

I'd personally go with the first eels record, but yeah, they belong here for sure. Definitely OK Computer too. One of the top two or three definitive alternative albums of all time I think. The Wikipedia entry is (for once) a handy reminder of how utterly unexpected it was at the time (alternative indeed, even for rabid fans of The Bends), and the extent to which its reputation may even still be growing...

Maybe the biggest one missing for me personally is My Bloody Valentine, Loveless, one of my all-time favorites. Not far behind, Sugar's Copper Blue. It was named NME's Record of the Year for 1992, and spawned a top 30 single and high-rotation video with one of early decade's greatest singles imo. Poppier than the rest of the album, which falls squarely in the alt rock category...but hey, a poppy single on alt rock album never hurt anybody.

  24. I think Pearl Jam would fit into Grunge for the original poster.

  25. Alt-rock was just pop or regular rock in the 90s. It was one of the dominant sounds and wasn't "underground" at all. What would it have been "alt" to?
