My personal five, in no specific order:

My Bloody Valentine, "Loveless": Beauty in heavy guitar. Super-weird, gorgeous album. Finding your way into it is half the fun. Getting lost in it is the other half.

Liz Phair, "Exile in Guyville": Such a musically adventurous album. Fragments of classic-rock tropes assembled tenuously into barely held-together pop songs.

R.E.M., "Automatic for the People": Great acoustic (and slightly electric) rock album. The singles were strong and representative of the album (although--this might be a strong take--I don't especially like "Everybody Hurts"), but the best tracks are the ones that end the sides ("Sweetness Follows", "Find the River").

Sloan, "One Chord to Another": The album I listened to obsessively in the '90s. What a relief it was to hear a rock album so plainly pop in the mid-'90s post-grunge fatigue. I continue to love it. Twelve immensely strong power-pop songs.

Talk Talk, "Laughing Stock": Current obsession, and what are these lists for if not to put what you are excited about right now? I first heard this one a couple of days ago and it immediately sounded like an album I wouldn't ever want to be without.

    Some more favorites:

    Apples in Stereo, "Science Faire"
    Beck, "Odelay"
    Eric's Trip, "Love Tara"
the Flashing Lights, "Where the Change Is"
    Low, "Secret Name"
    Paul Westerberg, "14 Songs"
    Pavement, "Terror Twilight"
    Radiohead, "OK Computer"
    Ride, "Going Blank Again"
    Sleater-Kinney, "Dig Me Out"
    Sugar, "Copper Blue"
    Urge Overkill, "Saturation"
Various Artists, "Great Jewish Music: Marc Bolan"
the Verve, "A Storm in Heaven"
    Zumpano, "Goin' Through Changes"

Funny to note how much I loved pop music in the '90s, but have not heard the vast majority of albums on the poll! There was so much of this sort of rock music in this decade!

If britpop and grunge are excluded:

    Afghan Whigs - 1965
Catherine Wheel - Chrome / Adam & Eve
Nick Cave - Let Love In / Murder Ballads / The Boatman's Call
    Failure - Fantastic Planet
    Morrissey - Vauhaul & I
R.E.M. - Automatic for the People / New Adventures in Hi-Fi
Ride - Nowhere / Going Blank Again
    Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
    Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque
    U2 - Achtung Baby
Paul Weller - Wild Wood / Stanley Road (arguably britpop, though he precedes that genre)

Anyone who liked "Automatic for the People" (nearly half the people who voted in the poll) ought not sleep on that one. Just make "Automatic" electric (and slightly acoustic) rather than acoustic (and slightly electric) and that's what "New Adventures" sounds like to me.

  12. I'm confused - the thread title asks for our top 5, but at the top of the poll, it asks for our top 3. Oh wee, doesn't matter, I only voted for one, Morphine's "Cure For Pain".

My favorite 90s alt-rock album is Puzzle by Dada. Great songs, and very well-recorded.

Shoegazing and Madchester are apparently excluded as well. Why so few British?

I voted for Janes, Breeders, Sonic Youth, Wilco and Pavement
but these would not make my definitive top 5 except for Pavement...

Guided by Voices is a top 5

not sure what my others were.. it was a great decade.. particularly 1994-1995 blew me away... last great era in my opinion

Not sure that those are all alt.rock. I know my 2 picks were not alt.rock. But I voted for two that would be in my top 5 of the 90's: Achtung and Blood Sugar. None of the rest would be in my top 5 of anything. Most not even close.

I voted, but there were no Mekons or Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on the list, so my picks aren't necessarily my go to favorites.

Radiohead - The Bends: certainly one of the finest rock guitar albums ever produced, and one of the band's best LP's

Nine Inch Nails - Downward Spiral: epic album with many layers, and the best thing Reznor ever did

Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream: IMO their best work, they went massively downhill and quick after this record

Tool - Aenima: I could swap out Undertow for this one, but Aenima was seminal listening during my senior year of High School. My friends and I listened to it every day, without fail

Morphine - Cure For Pain: I remember when this came out, but I didn't really get into Morphine until a year or so after Mark Sandman had died. All their records are great, very cool and unique band.

I would also add Swervedriver's Raise and Mezcal Head, as well as Catherine Wheel's Ferment and Chrome. 4 incredible releases that I still listen to very often.

Not sure if 'James' qualify, but I'd certainly include their 'seven' and 'laid' albums.
....also Eels : Beautiful freak, I think is quality listening from start to finish and certainly gets me swinging my pants!

  24. I would have liked to have some Jellyfish, the Grays, Crowded House, Tal Bachman, or any Jason Falkner to choose from.
