    1. George Burns & Gracie Allen were excellent, but George IMHO was the crux. Gracie was sweet & ditzy, but I couldn't watch her for too long... George I could watch doing stand-up anytime.

    2. The model after which many sitcoms have followed.

    3. William Bendix was the original "King Of Queens".

    4. Sid Caesar & Imogene Coca... trailblazers. There are some very interesting stories told about Sid by Mel Brooks, Johnny Carson, etc. He was a real force to reckon with.... in many ways.

    5. No comment. <GRIN>

I eagerly await the DVD release of 'Mary Hartman' and maybe even 'Fernwood 2Nite', if only to see if they're as good as I remember them to be (haven't seen 'em since they first aired when I was but a mere young'un).

I'm sort of surprised that no-one mentioned 'Match Game PM.' :p

    Meds
    Boomtown
    Canadian Reflections

Meds and Boomtown were much better than the networks afforded them. Canadian Reflections, a collection of old shorts and pieces of early CBC programs, was fascinating. Remember WENN suffered from being in a movie channel (AMC), but caught the radio period beautifully. And Due South is my hands down favorite. Great writing, editing, acting--- everything of consistently high quality.

    1. Babylon 5
This is the only TV show that ever effected me emotionally in any way. It just worked brilliantly as both a grand, epic myth-making political history and in terms of personal character development. It has moments that are absolutely heart-wrenching which works because of years of build-up. Also some of the finest theatrical-style acting on American television.

    2. Star Trek
The grand-daddy, the godfather, the first serial sci-fi for adults that counts, and Spock!

    3. Deadwood
This one has me absolutely captivated, and it's the first time a running show has ever really got me excited (everything else I caught on repeats and home video).

    4. The Simpsons
I just pretend the last few years or so haven't been happening and only refer to its peak, which is the richest comedy I've ever seen on television.

    5. The Twilight Zone
Other than Babylon 5, the only show I can watch a marathon of.

    1) Moonlighting - I'm such a nut for screwball comedies and smart, witty lines.
    2) Homicide: Life on the Streets - Did this edgy show really air on network television? Wow...
    3) The Dick Van Dyke Show - Decades later, and still the best sitcom ever.
    4) The Prisoner - The godfather of all cult television shows, in quality if not chronology; strange and intelligent.
    5) I Love Lucy - Fred Mertz is the greatest male sitcom character ever...

    Shalom, y'all!

Following this thread, I really started thinking about all these great shows and I have to say that even tho I did mention it, Quantum Leap has to be one of the best ever because:

Over the 5 year period, they held together multiple story lines while creating new story lines in various timelines. All of this plus keeping each characters story/timeline intact and even bolstering the episodes.

The few several part episodes were excellent, though the best I think was "Trilogy" where Sam plays a person in the same town each leap and culminates with him actually fathering a daughter. (Sammy Jo)

Also, the last episode has to be one of the most emotion drawing eps on TV ever. If you can't find something to identify with in that episode, you just haven't lived much.

There are other series which had phenomenal timelines & a cohesive storyline.... Babylon 5, Farscape just to name a few.

If you think something other was better... tell us why!
