I like Eyes as well (on my list above) It was solid and down to Earth... which as needed after Moonraker. I would have liked that one more had they not actually gone to space.

For Your Eyes Only, would have been a really good last Moore one and having a new Bond after it might have made the next two better and different...

NY Times magazine had a recent photo essay of some of the Bond 'girls' including Honor Blackman, Lynn Holly Johnson, Barbara Carrera and Jill St. John. None have aged well; HB looks like a taller Ann Richards, LHJ has BIG hair, BC hasn't missed many meals lately and apparently my beautiful Tiffany Case (JStJ) ran into a guy who stayed at a Holliday Inn Express and let him perform plastic surgery on her face!
***** Galore, Aston Martins, the lovely Ms. St. John, the equally lovely Lana Wood (Plenty O'Toole) are all I've ever noticed in these flicks, the Mrs. would dump me in a heartbeat for Sean Connery.

    1. From Russia With Love - This is my favorite by a wide margin.
    2. Casino Royale (Craig) - Love the energy in this film.
    3. The Spy Who Loved me
    4. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    5. Dr. No
    6. Goldfinger
    7. For Your Eyes Only - I like this, but find the shifts in tone jarring. It is a silly adventure movie or a serious spy thriller? Still, lots of great sequences and the plot is intelligent.
    8. Thunderball - The movie has problems, but damn Connery was in his prime.
    9. Goldeneye - Right now this is my favorite of the Brosnan films.
    10. Moonraker - Grand, gloriously stupid fun.

I really like the Casino Royale, Goldfinger and Moonraker scores. I believe Robbie Williams sampled some of the music from Moonraker for "Millenium", which is a really catchy tune.

Did any of you ever read the Ian Fleming novels? Bond was a conflicted guy. I'll have to watch all the old films again before I could vote. (Goldfinger was a fav when I saw it in theatrical release, but as others have already said, it might seem a bit too thin now. I did like the reboot of Casino Royale, though I still like the original soundtrack on Colgems).
And you are aware of the whole Chris Blackwell-Ian Fleming connection?
As well as Fleming's history as one of the intelligence guys that came up with that scheme to float a dead body carrying papers misdirecting the Nazis re the Allied invasion?
Some of the real history is as good as the Bond stories themselves....

Island records / Chris Blackwell got Fleming's house. Real history' I think the first 2 Bond films give a good portrait of the Fleming's vision of Bond sans... Cary Grant as the leading man. :)

No contest for first place, this is the one Bond flick that I think can be truly called a great film in its own right, apart from the franchise. Here, you have the first appearance of SPECTRE #1 (alluded to in Dr. No) complete with white cat, a great performance from Lotte Lenya as #3 (the rest of the supporting cast is top notch too!), and Sean Connery really settling into the character.

    2. Goldfinger (1964)
Yeah, the gimmicks are starting to take over, and this could be read as formulaic, but for my money this one "has it all" so to speak (including "***** Galore"!), not mention arguably the greatest/catchiest theme song bar none. My favorite lines are when Bond says "Do you expect me talk?" and Goldfinger answers "No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!"

    3. Dr. No (1962)
The one that started it all is easy to dismiss, but I find myself watching it just about every time it comes on television, so it has held interest at least for me (Ursula Andress as "Honey Ryder" could have something to do with this). Besides, here is where you learn what SPECTRE stands for (I believe it is: special executive for counter-intelligence, terrorism, revenge, extortion). The rest of the Sean Connery Bond films have their moments, but none of them, or any of the others for that matter, really measure up to these first three movies.

    4. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
George Lazenby's one outing as 007 was actually one of the better Bond movies, featuring Telly Savalas and Diana Rigg. It made perfect sense to me that the one woman Bond would marry would be Emma Peel, but you knew she'd have to be killed off for the sake of the franchise.

    5. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
As other posts have noted, this was probably the best of the Roger Moore Bond films. Not only did it introduce a popular character, Jaws (who would appear again in the inferior Moonraker), but it also featured one of the best Bond girls in Barbara Bach: "I think you'll find the lady's figure hard to match!"

    6. Octopussy (1983)
OK, this is a guilty pleasure (hey, I'm entitled to at least one, aren't I?). I suppose it could be seen as Raiders-lite, and quite possibly the cheesiest of the entire franchise, but it's just so mindlessly entertaining that I can't help but enjoy it, especially Louis Jourdan who appears to be playing his role tongue-in-cheek fresh from Swamp Thing.

    7. For Your Eyes Only (1981)
Well, this was objectively better than Octopussy, but that's not really saying much. I rank it slightly lower because it seems disjointed, not quite knowing whether it's an action adventure or a spy thriller, and simply isn't as fun for me as Octopussy. I guess I'm partial to Roger Moore because he was the current Bond when I was first introduced to the series, even though like probably just about everyone else, I like Sean Connery best.

    8. Casino Royale (2006)
The series was in need of a re-boot at the time of this movie, and Daniel Craig appeared to fit the bill nicely. Although I haven't actually re-watched this, or really any of the other post-Roger Moore flicks too much since their theatrical runs, my recollection here was that I came away liking it.

    9. Goldeneye (1995)
Pretty much the same reasoning here as in #8. At the time this film premiered following a six year hiatus, I recall it was then considered that the franchise couldn't survive the end of the cold war (the last Bond outing, License to Kill, seemed underwhelming going against a drug lord as opposed to ruthless tyrants who wanted to take over the world). When this proved to be a big hit, the series was re-born, and Pierce Brosnan brought some fun back to the role after the seriousness of Timothy Dalton.

    10. The Living Daylights (1987)
Again, I chose this one mostly on memory similar to #8 and #9. Here, I tend to agree with conventional wisdom that it was merely time to change actors, as Roger Moore looked awfully tired in A View to A Kill, and Sean Connery's attempt at a come-back to Bond (the less said about Never Say Never Again the better!) made Octopussy look like sheer genius (which it ain't!). What's kind of ironic is that Timothy Dalton got slighted then for doing essentially exactly what Daniel Craig is getting kudos for doing now; that is, bringing a sense of realism to the character making Bond more in line with Ian Fleming's vision from the books, rather than relying heavily on Cary Grant-ish good looks and snappy one-liners. To be fair, I thought both Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan did good jobs, and it might have seemed less jarring to audiences had the "lighter" Brosnan stepped in to the role immediately following Roger Moore's departure, but then fans of "Remington Steele" might have been disappointed, so I guess the rest is history.

    22. Quantum of Solace (2008-Daniel Craig)
    23. Skyfall (2012-Daniel Craig)

    My picks:
    On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    Goldfinger
    From Russia with Love
    You Only Live Twice
    For Your Eyes Only
    The World Is Not Enough

and the rest I just kinda go "eh, they're OK, but not great." The Roger Moore films are haaarible when you watch them 25-30 years after the fact. I just tried to watch The Spy Who Loved Me, and it's just awful. Moonraker is unwatchable by humans. I liked the "tougher" Roger Moore in For Your Eyes Only, and I like the car chase where he's in the crappy car, so I give him points for that.

The Dalton films bore me to death. I like the Daniel Craig films to a point, but he's such a stiff, serious character, it's hard for me to get into those movies -- but I recognize he's a good actor and the films are well-made. Just not that much fun to me.

I'm in the crowd that says that OHMSS would've been the best Bond in history if they had gotten Connery to star in it. Great story, very faithful to the book, though I don't deny the film's long length and slow pace are hard for a lot of people to get into.

"OHMSS Connery" Think he would have been to old for this. Laz(big fry )would have been great in Diamonds also..pity his ego got in the way. Agree on DC.. Time to bring back some mirth.

Connery would only have been 39 years old in 1969. Daniel Craig was 37 years old when he made his first Bond film, Casino Royale. (Connery was born in 1930; Craig born in 1968.)

He must have 41 when he did Diamonds and he looked more 71. genes hard living .. Dunno. He did look healthier in NSNA. Better actor and better Bond. But the Australian model /TV Commercials guy.. Nailed OHMSS imo.
