I buy everything they have left for pennies. Can't tell you how many great LPs I have scored on the cheap this way.

Lotta dross. But the cream is well worth it.

It sure is! New Chautauqa - ECM-1-1131. It sounds great - listened to it over my morning coffee and really sounds dynamic on vinyl!

I know - it's painful to think about. But back in '87 we all thought vinyl was dead since CDs were so dang clear sounding! It really was revolutionary at the time, and I shudder to think that I traded in so many LPs for pennies on the dollar.

  5. My collection is mostly used record store and thrift store. I usually will not pay more than $5.00 for any one lp. I do occasionally purchase new vinyl from stores like Barnes and Noble, but only new releases. I won't pay big $ for reissues of 60s, 70s, or 80s albums.

Condition is the main factor for me. I would rather spend $25 on new reissue than $5 on a less than stellar used copy. I'd rather spend $5 on a nice clean used copy.

Anything and everything, although I admit that I buy more new vinyl now than used.

I put together my vinyl collection in the last ten years.75% came from thrift stores and almost all are vg+.Those thrift vinyl picking days are pretty much over around these parts so Im glad I got into it when I did.I have about 600 total and thats enough for me except for a very few I would like to get.Now the next thing is to finish getting my 50s-60s jazz vinyl setup complete. When one has a lot of gear you tend to get bogged down so I am getting near where I want to be.

The classifieds on SHTV are really good, most of the time! I get nearly all of my used vinyl there. And I have made some contacts/friends that send me vinyl lists through a private message. Be careful on eBay and discogs, the grading can be dang sketchy so make sure they have a return policy or pay through PayPal so you have a guaranteed purchase!

For new vinyl, I like www.musicdirect.com, amazon, motif.com and www.acousticsounds.com

Glad to see you enjoying the forums!

I guess Slackers isn't independent, but there is also Hitt Records they have a killer selection. I work at Vinyl Renaissance, I love my shop but Hitt is probably the other I go to most often. I love ITG but I just don't make it up much more than once or twice a month

A little bit of everything. Don't really bother with thrift stores anymore, picked over and a waste of time. I'm generally picky about the condition of records. I put back tons of records I would otherwise buy because the condition isn't up to par. Some records are difficult to find in decent shape. For those I use a backup cartridge.

I try and buy stuff in vg++ playback condition or better, jackets are a secondary consideration. Mastering and pressing quality of utmost importance and priority always.

    1. Still have the first records I ever bought in 1973 at the age of 12. Their condition is suspect.
    2. I still have every record I have ever bought.
    3. Being OCD about them means most are in really great shape.
    4. I now buy mostly used NM records from local stores.
    5. I'm a big dead wax reader and do very close visual inspections.
    6. I don't buy lots of records, stay on budget, buy under the radar stuff that is clean and no one else cares much about. Mainly filling in gaps in my own collection.

My collection ranges from 10 cent thrift store records, to, still sealed rarities bought for far to much money(most of these no longer sealed, not all, but most). I have no bias of any kind, I will take my vinyl treasures where I find them. Those 10 cent finds still have to be VG+, learned long ago culling later on is no fun (for me anyways).

I'm sure those of us who share our experience of the 1990s came across copies of rare LPs for a dollar exactly once and then never saw another copy again. I have too many to even begin to list here, but I remember at a flea market finding a pristine copy of Piero Piccioni's score for The Tenth Victim on Mainstream for a dollar. I also found a pristine copy of Robert Mitchum's calypso album on Capitol for 75 cents at a thrift store. And The Raymond Scott 7's The Unexpected on I-forget-what-obscure-label for 50 cents at a yard sale.

It was like I spent 10 years or so as little kid perpetually in a candy store with a hundred dollar bill in my pocket.

A bit of everything except specialist audiophile pressings. I bought loads of stuff from charity shops until it started to dry up over the last couple of years. I still get the occasional worthwhile record though.

A lot from second hand record shops, record fairs and eBay.

Relatively few new reissues. I like to get original pressings, or at least vintage ones on the right label, when I buy vinyl albums. If these are unobtainable I'll usually buy a CD instead. I like reissues to be as faithful to the original as possible. The Beatles Mono Box is a perfect example of how to do it. I don't like modern looking labels, altered artwork, CD digital remasters being used as the source or missing gatefolds, inner sleeves and inserts on reissue vinyl.

I returned to vinyl in 2009, and I currently have around 3,500 albums, plus around 500 singles. I buy used and new, originals and reisssues, mostly in stores and on Discogs. eBay is an occasional source, as is Amazon.

As noted already, the glory days for thrift shops are pretty much over, although there still some finds to be had in rural areas. Swap meets and flea markets are occasionally worthwhile, as are estate sales.
