I'll need to consult a vegetable about this release? Which one? Why, broccoli of course!

    (That's an in-joke, you know.)

I don't really need it. I have my old Ryko CD and the 2012 CD reissue.

That's right. Freak Out! was a huge budget (2 LP). They had to pay that off, so Absolutely Free had a tighter budget as a result. I would not mind mono editions of Freak Out! and Absolutely Free whether they are fold downs or not.

    They're both dedicated mono mixes

I'd kill for good-quality official releases of the mono mixes for Freak Out!, Absolutely Free, and We're Only in It for the Money.

My interest in FZ for years was limited to these 3 early Mothers albums and Hot Rats, but once I crossed the 1970 threshold I've continued straight through to Sheik Yerbouti. What incredible music.

Tempting, but I'm happy with my mono copy.

I agree about Freak Out! Don't really care about the mono Absolutely Free.

As for Money, I assume you mean vinyl since this exists: Frank Zappa - Lumpy Money Project/Object [3 CD] - Amazon.com Music

Even if you hate all of disc two, you're welcome for one and three. :)

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

Same here, though in reissue terms, it's smart that the original track listing is being used for this repress rather than sticking a single side between Side 1 and 2, which was done for at least a few editions of the compact disc.

It IS a droll album, but I've always liked it. Quite a bit of snark, but as usual with anything Zappa, underneath the layers of snearing and bullbleep are found some telling words and referenes. The story of "Status Back Baby" always rang very true for me, and in its fashion is a more cynical take on Chuck Berry's view of average teens scattered throughout his catalog of classics. Zappa was really our first and very vocal Outsider, the misfit who longed for popularity and prestige but, left on the outside looking in, decided to nail those guys doing so good in DeMolay, track, football, with all the girls fawning over them. Yet he was a misanthrope who also dug doo-wop and R&B along with Varese and jazz, and FREE has a little bit of everything.

What's needed is a Deluxe Edition, vinyl and CD, with both mono and stereo mixes, the single sides, and then with other oddball things tossed in. What's described here just doesn't seem enough to justify the reissue.

I have a really good original, but the cover is trashed. Thinking about this one.

This record totally changed my life in high school (I was your basic Beatles/Simon & Garfunkel fan previously). But like a lot of other things, my tastes have changed over the years. Don't think I'll shell out the $ for what would be a one-time nostalgia trip, although the Bernie involvement makes it tempting.

Still a classic album, though, with one of my favorite Mothers line-ups.

Glad the turntable is boxed up. Don't have to worry about an impulse purchase.

Time to drink up and go home.

My turntable doesn't make impulse purchases. My laptop, however, is very bad about it. . .

So two useless radio ads, part of an interview, a single that's already on CD, a remix (Brown Shoes) that's already on CD, and two more remixes of the least interesting tracks on the album?

    Yep, pass.
