BTW, I just have to mention that I get Cinemax for a penny a year and they do a good job of showing new stuff and different odds and ends. They showed bedazzeled with Duddley Moore and its a cool little film I've never heard of.
Last night, they showed Zardoz and this was a very strange film.
They had Connery running around almost naked except for a red diaper.
The wiki on this one is indecipherable.
Just curious on your thoughts about this one.

I have it at home from Blockbuster Online. I started to watch it, but was too tired to stay awake (no fault of the film). I am going to give it a go this weekend.

It's like a SciFi version of Meet Mr. Black. Death and violence are unknown on this certain planet (Earth?). Connery's character is an atavistic barbarian there to bring death and destruction in order to provide them some excitement in their dull but safe lives.

I remember going to see it in the theatre and thinking they couldn't pay me enough money to act in this piece of garbage. Simply awful. Not in a so bad, it's good kind of way either.

  7. It's one of my favorite cult movies. It's absurd, whimsical, campy and has Sean Connery in a big red diaper with a pony tail roaming the Irish countryside. What more could you want out of a movie?

  8. Oh it's definitely Earth.

Its one of those ' you must see once' movies, even if you go "wtf????"

Folks forget that during the 70's and early 80's Connery wasnt a popular or in demand actor. It wasnt really till The Untouchables that his star was re-lit.

I really like this movie. Great story about a futuristic society that has advanced to physical immortality, yet is miserable due to a lack of intellectual challenges. When the savage Connery takes a trip inside the wizard's head in order to see behind the curtain, he finds that when the books disintegrate, life becomes intolerable.... wiZARD of OZ.

  12. Actually originall it was breakdancing robots playing "Dueling Banjos" but they had to cut those out because of an issue with Warner:D

Joking of course for those who might miss the reference.

Listen to John Boorman's commentary on the DVD and you'll gain a new appreciation for it.

It's so-over-the-top that I can't help but love the movie for its camp value.

I have a quarter sheet poster of it hanging in my office.

    I love the tag line

"I have seen the future and it doesn't work".

I wonder if the publicity department at Fox saw the movie and said, "it doesn't work" and then hit on the advertising!!

It's definitely an acquired taste movie just like "Lifeforce".

    Interesting director John Boorman.

Oh, ok. I couldn't remember if they just set it in the future or on a different planet. Still a real stinker. I'd rather watch Roadhouse again.

Haven't seen it in years, but I remember "Lifeforce" as a stinker.

    That said:

    "Zardoz"? Connery in a diaper.

    "Lifeforce"? Mathila May nekkid.

    "Lifeforce" wins!

"Roadhouse" is a far crummier film than "Zardoz". At least "Zardoz" boasts some intellectual ambition; "Roadhouse" actively lowers IQ points as you watch it. "Roadhouse" isn't even interesting as campy cheese:

  20. Zardoz gives me a headache whenever I watch it--just like Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Phantom of the Paradise, and Buckaroo Banzai do. Come to think of it, Lifeforce does too! Needless to say, after the first time I watched each of these, my subsequent viewings of them were rather limited.

I can't stand any of those movies mentioned except Zardoz. That movie was so weird I had to go out and buy it! Definitely worth the 6 bucks I spent for the DVD! This is the movie that Sean Connery won't talk about. After watching it, you know why.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Zardoz, Phantom and Buckaroo are 3 of my favorite movies of all time. Add Lisztomania into the mix and you have a fun night with a bunch of friends who won't know what hit them.

I have Zardoz on LD and DVD....Sean in boots and diapers versus the intellectual sluts of the forbidden future...."....the gun is good, the ***** is bad...", as good ole Zardoz always liked to say... Zardoz is my kind of talking head.
