This thread is devoted to the music of ZZ Top's first four albums, back when they were just that "Li'l Ol' Band From Texas."

I cast my lot with Rio Grande Mud. Although I know Tres Hombres will probably run away with top honors.

    Vote and let's discuss.

I think Rio Grande Mud is the most solid overall. The studio side of Fandango is fantastic, but the live side is sub-par.

I have to go with First Album  I agree that Tejas is their masterpiece....

I consider their “little ol' blooz'n'boogie band from Texas” era from the First Album to Tejas. All are great but I keep returning to Rio Grande Mud, I find it their strongest overall.

I’m not sure how they did it but the original domestic vinyl albums remain some of the best sounding recordings of the era, or any other for that matter. Some later audiophile recording can also sound very good.

I bought Tres Hombres on vinyl back in 1985 and have loved it ever since. Unfortunately it went to a friend along with my other LPs in the early 90s but the reissue our host did is superb.

I'd vote for Tejas if I could. I think it should be in there as a choice. The Worldwide Texas Tour included the Tejas album on its second leg.

They are all great, but I voted Fandango. I guess I like the live portion better than many of you did.

And these original pressings in clean condition fetch a pretty penny.

It would be interesting to know what London did that made these records sound so clean and smooth at a time when the quality of U.S. vinyl was going downhill.

I just played Side 1 of First and it really is a thing of beauty. "Brown Sugar" is unbelievably rich. What a band and what an album.

  19. Went with Tres Hombres, but think Tejas should be consideed "early ZZ Top". Deguillo is where there sound really started to change.

I agree. The live side kicks some serious tail, but the studio side has some of they're best tunes. Probably my favorite album side of all ZZ Top lps.

  21. A buddy of mine scored an original London pressing of 'Tres Hombres' for $4 at a thrift store. Took it to his place, cleaned it, cranked it, dug it. The astonishing amount of pure fat-*** boogie in those fidelious grooves blew our minds! We drank about 10 beers before it was over...
