KISS did a similar thing with their Smashes, Thrashes & Hits compilation from 1988. The '70s tracks were remixed and given an '80s makeover, complete with bad drum sound like the ZZ Top collection. They even replaced Peter Criss' vocal on "Beth" with one by their then-drummer, Eric Carr.

Fortunately, it was only a few tracks on a compilation. KISS later realized that it was a mistake and never repeated it.

The biggest difference on that disc IMO was what they did with I Love It Loud. Damn digital drums. Sucked the life out of the song and de-balled it. Went from a thump to a tink.

I, like many others picked up this when it came out. My first impression was - WTF is going on with the drums? They wanted to bring the sound up to "modern" standards? OUCH!! This is one thing I'm glad Katrina washed out.

Sorry, my mistake when I said that "Who did the actual remixing in not stated anywhere" in my post, I was thinking about the separate CD releases where it doesn't mention remixing. I forgot that there is that page in the booklet of the SixPack.

However I don't understand why Terry Manning would be asked to do it it two days and then, when he didn't want to do it, someone else "laboured for months with the unmixed tapes", so it is word against word (and personally I don't trust what's in the booklet, it is sales-talk). I still don't see Bill Ham having anything to do with the actual mixing, so maybe Bob Ludwig mastered it (don't know if he usually gets involved in mixing), and maybe Joe Hardy is the guy that did the remixing?

For example the credits for Antenna say:

Mixing – Joe Hardy

Mastering – Bob Ludwig

So maybe that was the usual division of labour?

Agree the hype factor is there.
It doesn't list who did what.
