I expect people to be dumping their CDs once they've ripped their files. A lot of people just don't want all that stuff in their lives.

For the reason that RobinL said (ripping them for the server) but also just chronology. The older baby boomers are already retiring and moving, downsizing or going into senior buildings/assisted living. Out go the CDs.

It's a real bargain, but has way too much Mozart and Brahms for me: eighteen discs out of 51. I find that these mega-boxed sets can end up just sitting on a shelf if you're not careful.

Same for Smahler! His Insurrection Symphony is a great inspiration to me.

Of course the EMI UK issue will be a nice sonic upgrade.

I would hope so. I love the music; but, I'm not crazy about the sonics. I acquired the cassette first (4x2s-3870) and thought perhaps it was worn. Then I got this vinyl pressing (SB-3870 -1 & -2). Apparently, there was nothing physically "wrong" with the cassette. The LP has a bit more clarity; but, there's something else going on here. I look forward to finding/hearing the EMI UK issue you speak of, one day. I'm still glad I have it/them, though.

Good lord, no posters all day Saturday...
Before everybody checks out, take this short quiz concocted by WETA: Classical composers personality quiz: What composer are you?

Just click on submit, you don't have to register.

Some of my answers were pretty arbitrary, but I ended up as Tchaikovsky, which is interesting, because he would not rank in my top 20 composers.

And if you had the first decent Saturday weather since October, you wouldn't be posting either.:)

Hmmm...given my own experience, I think I'm seeing a pattern developing.

[edit] Mind you, you could do a lot worse. Wouldn't you hate to turn out to be Wagner?!? :sweating:

I have that CD as well and it is the only Chesky classical recording I own. All my other Chesky recordings are jazz.

How bad is the press quality?

The EMI release of the same recording is always a few notches above Angel in terms of press quality ... :agree:

I turned out to be Brahms, which is not all that surprising to me. And I should think Brahms is in everybody's top twenty. :agree:

That was certainly true in the 60s and 70s. However by the early 80s I have found much less difference between US and UK Angel LPs (actually most of them in the 80s were pressed in Germany). That is not dependent on whether the recording was digital or not.

I should probably say that this pressing is not "horrible". I've heard horrible LP pressings where the noise and the music are essentially neck and neck duking it out :wantsome:with neither one the clear winner. This is not in that league. Thinking about it, I have several blue label Angel's that are actually quite good; a Vaughan Williams and a Saint-Saens comes to mind.

Some of the blue Angels can sound OK until you hear the UK pressing. The Melodiya Angels are the ones that have some arguable plusses. They are mixed quite differently from the actual Melodiyas or UK Melodiyas, more immediate and larger images and with foreshortened soundstage, which on some less than stellar Melodiya recordings and material can be beneficial. They always sound a bit coarser though.

Looks like I'll have to pull out my Melodiya Angels and give them another spin. I'm sure I've seen some of them in there... ...somewhere. :)
